Job Summary:
Under the direction of the Radiation Manager Supervisor or Therapy Lead, the Radiation Therapist works with the clinical physicists, dosimetrists, and other therapists as part of a treatment team. Staff therapists are proficient in many departmental functions, primarily the accurate and safe delivery of daily radiation treatments. Proficiency is achieved through rotations on all treatment units and exposure to CT simulation.
Accountabilities:
Patient Care and Education: Explains radiation procedures thoroughly to patients, reinforces physician’s directives, verifies patient information, transfers patients safely, provides emotional support, and reports any concerns or changes in patient condition to appropriate staff.
Procedure Preparation/Patient Preparation: Prepares treatment rooms and equipment, ensures supplies are stocked, and reports low supply levels.
Procedure Execution: Reviews and signs forms, assists with patient undressing, attaches devices, positions patients, checks charts, performs simulation procedures, monitors dosimetry, and administers IV contrast as prescribed.
Machine and Equipment Operations: Operates machinery safely, maintains equipment, manages treatment fields, evaluates equipment during operation, and ensures safety standards are met. Documents treatments accurately and takes setup photographs when applicable.
Work Organization and Coordination: Schedules treatments effectively, maintains workflow, and transports patients safely.
Problem Solving: Recognizes and reports problems, takes corrective actions, and suggests solutions.
Information Exchange: Communicates clearly, listens carefully, and maintains confidentiality.
Independence/Tenacity: Works independently, keeps supervisors informed, seeks advice when needed, explores solutions, and pursues goals persistently.
Performs duties according to Penn Medicine values, policies, and procedures, and supports the department and organization as needed.
