Louisiana State University’s Radiation Safety Office seeks a Radiation Safety Compliance Coordinator to run the radiological control program’s daily operations and handle administrative tasks in the Nuclear Science Building.

You will develop and implement mandated policies, ensure compliance with regulations, and safeguard people, the environment, and the University's integrity while supporting research, teaching, and clinical activities.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

  • Maintains the daily operations of the Radiation Safety Office. Organizes office records, maintains the database of radiation users and activities, determines user fees, maintains labs/equipment, and manages RSO vehicles.
  • Trains, coordinates, and supervises up to 5 student workers each academic year.
  • Organizes radiation user applications, administers examinations, and manages mandated radiation monitoring program.
  • Coordinates receipts, disbursement, and shipments of radioactive materials; manages mixed waste program.
  • Supervises radiation laboratory surveys and audits; maintains inventory and calibrates survey meters.
  • Performs laser hazard analysis and advises on laser regulations; maintains safety programs for microwave, RF, and UV radiation.
  • Maintains equipment and irradiators; responds to radiation incidents and emergencies; supports Director.

Job Description:

This position is responsible for maintaining routine operation of the radiological control program and managing administrative tasks. The Radiation Safety Office (RSO) provides guidance and support of research, teaching, and clinical activities involving the use of ionizing and non-ionizing radiation sources at LSU. The RSO is responsible for developing and implementing mandated radiological control policies and procedures as well as ensuring safe practice to not only comply with federal and state regulations and licensing/registration conditions but also assure adequate protection of people, the environment, and the integrity of the University. The RSO is responsible for developing and implementing mandated radiological control policies and procedures as well as ensuring safe practice to not only comply with federal and state regulations and licensing/registration conditions but also assure adequate protection of people, the environment, and the integrity of the University. This position is an integral part to fulfill the mission of the RSO.

Job Responsibilities:
  • Maintains the daily operations of the Radiation Safety Office. These administrative tasks include, but are not limited to, organizing office records, maintaining the database of radiation users and radiation use activities, determining radiation user fees, maintaining the RSO labs and equipment, and managing the RSO vehicles. Trains, coordinates, and supervises up to 5 student workers each academic year to perform assigned duties. (25%)
  • Organizes radiation user applications for review. Administers radiation safety examinations. Responsible for managing a mandated radiation monitoring program per regulatory requirements. (25%)
  • Responsible for coordinating receipts, disbursement, and outgoing radioactive shipments as well as collection, storage, processing, disposal, and transport of radioactive waste. Implements and maintains a mixed waste management program. (20%)
  • Supervises radiation laboratory surveys and performs audits. Maintains inventory of sources of radiation. Conducts inventory for licensed radioisotopes and leak tests of sealed sources. Calibrates radiation survey meters. (20%)
  • Performs laser hazard analysis and recommends control measures for Class 3B and Class 4 laser systems. Advises on export/import control regulations of laser systems. Maintains a microwave, radiofrequency, and ultraviolet radiation safety program. (5%)
  • Responsible for maintenance and operation of specialized equipment and irradiators. Responds to radiation incidents and radiation emergencies. Completes other miscellaneous tasks as assigned by the Director or supervisor. (5%)

Preferred Qualifications:

Master's Degree in Health Physics/Radiation Sciences. Experience in an academic/regulatory/research environment and working knowledge of federal and state radiation protection regulations.

Additional Information:

Due to the nature of the position and position responsibilities, this position shall be subject to drug/alcohol testing in accordance with University Policy Statement 67. Must have a valid driver's license, will require an MVR, and be able and willing to occasionally travel and to respond to radiological emergency situations outside of normal working hours. Must be able to handle and move 55-gallon steel drums and climb a ladder to work at height. A satisfactory background check for unescorted access is required per Louisiana Administrative Code Title 33, Part XV (LAC 33:XV), Chapter 16: Physical Protection of Category 1 and Category 2 Quantities of Radioactive Material.
