Job description

Amazon Leo is Amazon's low Earth orbit satellite network. Our mission is to deliver fast, reliable internet connectivity to customers beyond the reach of existing networks. From individual households to schools, hospitals, businesses, and government agencies, Amazon Leo will serve people and organizations operating in locations without reliable connectivity.

As a Radiation Effects Engineer, you will join a small team focused on the qualification of electronics components used on a satellites constellation and take an active role in root-cause analysis of on-orbit events. Your day-to-day work will include collaborating with design engineers to coordinate radiation testing and drive mitigation strategies of common error modes, analyzing satellite enclosures for TID robustness, and review on-orbit data to determine root-cause of common errors.

Export Control Requirement: Due to applicable export control laws and regulations, candidates must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (i.e., current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum.

Key job responsibilities

  • Define, collect, and analyze heavy ion, proton, and TID testing to qualify components against space radiation and build a radiation tested component database.

  • Develop processes for managing component and satellite hardware test results and documentation

  • Collaborate closely with electronic design teams to quantify radiation risk and develop mitigations schemes to radiation events.

  • Lead root-cause analysis of on-orbit radiation events. Develop tools and dashboards to organize and visualize on-orbit events.

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree or above in electrical engineering, computer engineering, or equivalent

  • 3+ years of experience in avionics development including electronic component selection and radiation test

  • Hands-on experience conducting radiation test campaigns using heavy ion and proton beam facilities for SEE characterization, and gamma ray sources (e.g., Co-60) for TID testing

  • Experience with including evaluating Single Event Effects (SEE) and Total Ionizing Dose (TID) on electronic components and systems.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree or Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering or related field

  • Experience in radiation effects testing for Total Ionizing Dose (TID) and Single Event Effects (SEE)

  • Experience with NASA, Defense or Commercial Space programs

  • Experience with particle transport tools such as FastRAD, NOVICE or GEANT4

  • Knowledge of radiation modeling tools such as Ax8/Ax9, CREME96, and SPENVIS

  • Knowledge of AWS tools such as S3 and DynamoDB
