Job summary

Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (APL) seeks a Radar Signal Processing and Sensor Systems Engineer to contribute across the lifecycle of advanced sensing capabilities. You will work on radar signal processing, modeling, simulation, and algorithm development to move concepts toward operational impact.

Ideal candidates hold a PhD and bring experience in radar/system analysis, data fusion, and strong programming skills (MATLAB/Python/C/C++/Julia).

Qualifications

  • PhD in electrical engineering, applied mathematics, physics, CS, systems engineering, statistics, mathematics, or a related field.
  • Graduate-level experience developing, evaluating, or assessing signal processing algorithms, radar systems, sensor systems, classification or discrimination algorithms, sensing architectures, or related modeling and simulation capabilities.
  • Technical depth in radar signal processing, detection/estimation theory, waveform analysis, sensor phenomenology, sensor modeling, or related areas.
  • Experience with MATLAB, Python, C/C++, Julia, or similar scientific programming languages.
  • Demonstrated technical leadership through graduate projects, internships, or sponsored work.
  • Ability to communicate technical results clearly to technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Willingness to travel up to 10% and ability to obtain security clearances.

Responsibilities

  • Develop, evaluate, and mature advanced signal processing, radar system, sensing, classification, and discrimination algorithms.
  • Own technical work packages and drive them from problem definition through results and transition planning.
  • Support concept development, requirements analysis, and performance assessment for radar and sensor systems.
  • Evaluate end-to-end radar system performance including detection and discrimination measures.
  • Perform verification, validation, test data analysis, and performance assessment for sensing capabilities.
  • Analyze complex sensor systems including radar phenomenology, waveform considerations, and sensor integration.
  • Design and execute modeling, simulation, and analysis studies to assess performance and inform recommendations.
  • Collaborate with sponsors and teams to solve challenges across signal processing, radar, and sensor architectures.
  • Provide technical leadership by coordinating small efforts and communicating data-driven recommendations.
  • Develop algorithmic prototypes and solutions advancing applied sensing and discrimination capabilities.
  • Apply tracking and data fusion where it supports sensor performance objectives.
