Job summary

Crary Industries, Inc. is seeking an R&D/Tooling Technician to join our team in West Fargo. The role focuses on developing, testing, modifying, and improving tooling, equipment, and products, with hands-on fabrication and prototyping.

You will work with engineering and manufacturing to build prototype systems, troubleshoot, and implement tooling improvements that enhance safety, quality, and efficiency. Applicants should have 2+ years in manufacturing or tooling environments and strong welding

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent; college degree preferred.
  • 2+ years in manufacturing, welding, fabrication, industrial maintenance, heavy-equipment repair, tooling, or related technical environment.
  • Experience reading engineering drawings, blueprints, sketches, and 3D models.
  • Strong welding and fabrication skills; ability to layout and fit-up weldments.
  • Experience building or repairing welding fixtures, jigs, or tooling.
  • Knowledge of welding sequences, heat input, distortion control, and dimensional accuracy.

Responsibilities

  • Diagnose mechanical failures and perform fabrication, repairs, modifications, and part installations on prototype and production equipment using drawings, 3D models, and instructions.
  • Fabricate and weld prototype assemblies, jigs, fixtures, tooling, and equipment from drawings and verbal direction.
  • Perform layout, tack welding, final welding, and dimensional verification of prototype and tooling weldments.
  • Apply welding sequence, fixturing, and distortion-control techniques to maintain accuracy.
  • Modify, repair, and improve production tooling and fixtures to enhance safety, quality, and efficiency.
  • Collaborate with Design/Manufacturing Engineering to develop practical tooling solutions.
  • Assemble prototype equipment and sub-systems including mechanical, hydraulic, and low-voltage electrical systems.
  • Troubleshoot mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical systems during assembly and testing.
  • Execute product and component testing, document results, and assist with test-method development.
  • Support prototype builds and production implementation of new products, processes, tooling, and equipment.
  • Use hand, power tools, welding/fabrication equipment, and precision measuring tools to complete work.

Job description

Crary Industries is looking for aR&D/Tooling Technicianto join our team and play a hands-on role in developing, testing, modifying, and improving tooling, equipment, and products.

In this position you will conduct product development, prototyping, performance testing, troubleshooting, and tooling fabrication activities in support of Engineering and Manufacturing. You will also build, modify, test, and repair prototype equipment and components while also fabricating, welding, modifying, and repairing jigs, fixtures, and production tooling.

Key Activities/Responsibilities:
  • · Diagnose mechanical failures and perform fabrication, repairs, modifications, and part installations on prototype and production equipment using engineering drawings, 3D models, specifications, sketches, and work instructions.
  • · Fabricate and weld prototype assemblies, jigs, fixtures, tooling, and equipment from engineering drawings, models, sketches, and verbal direction.
  • · Perform layout, fit-up, tack welding, final welding, and dimensional verification of prototype and tooling weldments.
  • · Apply appropriate welding sequence, fixturing, bracing, and other techniques to control distortion and maintain dimensional accuracy.
  • · Modify, repair, and improve production tooling and fixtures to improve safety, quality, repeatability, ergonomics, and manufacturing efficiency.
  • · Work with Design Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, and production personnel to develop practical tooling and prototype solutions.
  • · Identify manufacturability, fit-up, access, welding, distortion, assembly, and serviceability concerns and provide recommendations to Engineering.
  • · Assemble prototype equipment and sub-systems, including mechanical, hydraulic, and low-voltage electrical systems.
  • · Troubleshoot mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical systems during prototype assembly and testing.
  • · Execute product and component testing, collect data, document results, and assist with development of test methods and test equipment.
  • · Perform process-validation and prototype builds and support production implementation of new products, processes, tooling, and equipment.
  • · Use hand tools, power tools, welding/fabrication equipment, precision measuring tools, and other instruments required to complete assigned work.
  • · Operate tractors, forklifts, overhead cranes, and other heavy equipment as required.
  • · Maintain R&D, tooling, and test areas in a clean, safe, organized, and functional condition.
  • · Support tooling and manufacturing projects during periods of lower R&D workload.
Education:
  • · High school diploma or equivalent, college degree preferred
Job experience:

2 or more years' experience in manufacturing, welding, fabrication, industrial maintenance, heavy-equipment repair, tooling, or a related technical environment.

Skills Required:
  • Strong welding and fabrication skills
  • Experience performing layout and fit-up of weldments, including work without dedicated production fixtures
  • Experience building, modifying, or repairing welding fixtures, assembly fixtures, jigs, tooling, or custom fabricated equipment
  • Understanding of welding sequence, heat input, distortion control, and dimensional accuracy
  • Experience and technical knowledge of heavy-duty off-road, agricultural, construction, or industrial equipment
  • Working knowledge of mechanical, hydraulic, and low-voltage electrical systems
  • Mechanical troubleshooting and problem-solving ability
  • Ability to interpret engineering drawings, blueprints, sketches, technical documents, and 3D models
  • Experience using fabrication equipment and tools such as grinders, saws, drills, plasma cutting equipment, torches, and power tools
  • Ability to use precision measuring equipment and verify fabricated assemblies against dimensional requirements
  • Ability to operate tractors, forklifts, overhead cranes, and other material-handling equipment
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong attention to detail; able to organize, analyze, plan, and work independently while adjusting priorities as project needs change
  • Able to comply with all company rules and regulations
  • Able to, unassisted, lift 50-pound weight from the floor and carry it 50 feet
  • Able to stoop, bend and reach to full height
  • Able to stand on hard surface for periods up to 3 hours in duration
  • Able to exert a downward force with the right arm of 25 pounds
