Job summary

Avery Dennison is seeking an R&D Technician II for the Materials Group North America Innovation Center in Mentor, Ohio. You will perform weathering and analytical testing, maintain equipment, and contribute to projects across Graphics and Durables applications.

The role requires a science or engineering background, 1–2 years lab experience, and strong hands-on experimentation skills. Collaboration across teams and adherence to safety standards are essential.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Chemistry, Materials Science, Polymer Science, Mechanical or Chemical Engineering or related discipline preferred.
  • Minimum 1-2 years of lab experience.
  • Experience with weathering and accelerated aging tests is a plus.
  • Able to juggle multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong math, science and engineering fundamentals.

Responsibilities

  • Perform routine tests related to accelerated aging and analytical tests (FTIR, UV-Vis, GC-MS, LC-MS, HPLC, GPC).
  • Operate and maintain lab equipment; troubleshoot issues.
  • Prepare samples, collect data, and finalize test reports per SOPs.
  • Use ELN/LIMS and maintain calibration/maintenance records.
  • Ensure safety and quality procedures are followed.

Job Description

Avery Dennison is seeking a R&D Technician II to join the Materials Group North America Innovation Center in Mentor, Ohio. This position will be in the Materials Science and Analytical group which is responsible for developing, optimizing and characterizing materials technologies worldwide. In this role, the successful candidate will conduct product performance testing, maintenance and characterization to meet organizational needs for accelerated weathering testing, outdoor aging, analytical testing and specific weathering related projects for Graphics and Durables applications.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Perform routine tests related to accelerated aging and occasionally analytical tests including but not limited to physical property measurements, spectroscopic(FTIR, UV-VIS), chromatographic (GC-MS, LC-MS, HPLC, GPC), optical and electron microscopy, and product performance testing under the supervision of senior technical staff members.

Interface and collaborate with technical teams to help perform testing and provide results for further analysis.

Prepare samples, accurately collect data and record results, and finish test reports on various research and development projects following our standard procedure.

Utilize ELN/LIMS system and carefully curate reports and help with the cogent population of databases and assist in the development of SOPs.

Ability to troubleshoot, diagnose, and repair machinery in breakdown situations when necessary, maintain lab equipment and troubleshoot problems and resolve them internally or by contacting external vendors.

Perform all scheduled internal maintenance tasks according to the PM Schedule and most current procedures, maintain and organize the calibration/maintenance records.

Managing time to juggle multiple requests while ensuring on time completion.

Ensuring that all actions comply with our safety and quality procedures.

Qualifications

REQUIRED EDUCATION, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

Bachelor's Degree in Chemistry, Forensic Sciences, Materials Science, Polymer Science, Mechanical or Chemical Engineering or related discipline preferred.

Minimum 1-2 years of lab experience.

Prior experience with operating and maintaining weathering and accelerated aging test equipment is a plus. Must be mechanically inclined and possess good troubleshooting skills.

Ability to juggle multiple tasks in a fast paced environment.

Must understand basic math, science, and engineering principles.

Must possess excellent hands‑on experimentation skills.

Must communicate effectively in both oral and written form

Fast learner, meticulous attention to detail and scientific curiosity.

General computer skills (familiarity with Microsoft- and other software).

Ability to work independently as well as in a team.

Well‑organized and with a service oriented attitude.

Can-do attitude: skilled in executing experiments and trials per instruction; demonstrated scientific acumen and strategic thinking in obtaining results..

Skilled in interfacing effectively with cross-functional groups to define and execute overall requirements.

Environmental awareness and safety conscious.

Pay Transparency:

The hourly range for this position is $24.52-$36.61 / year.

The hiring base salary range above represents what Avery Dennison reasonably expects to pay for this position as of the date of this posting.
