Job summary

Smithfield Foods is seeking a Research & Development Technologist to lead projects that optimize costs through advanced formulation and processing efficiencies. You will develop new prototypes for product development and ensure high quality, scalable solutions.

In this role, you will collaborate with cross-functional teams to drive commercialization, manage pilot plant testing, and ensure compliance with USDA/FDA regulations while advancing product performance.

Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Food Science or related field with 2+ years of plant manufacturing experience required.
Master’s degree in Food Science, Biology, Microbiology, Animal Science or related field preferred/in lieu of experience.
Strong knowledge of meat and non-meat ingredients and their functionality.
Experience with pilot plant equipment and minimal supervision.
Proficient in online work systems and product development software tools.
Ability to multi-task and work in a fast-paced environment.

Responsibilities

Product Development and Commercialization: develop new products and line extensions from bench-top to full commercialization; run production tests to refine formulations.
Testing and Evaluation: conduct pilot plant tests, document findings, organize product reviews, and provide progress updates to stakeholders.
Collaboration and Cross-Functional Support: work with Business, Marketing, Sales, Manufacturing, Finance, Engineering, Quality, and Process Control.
Regulatory and Documentation Management: maintain project files, formulations, specifications, and product data; ensure USDA/FDA compliance.
