Job summary

Sherwin-Williams is seeking an R&D Technologist to advance powder coating technologies within the Heavy Equipment sector in the United States. The role focuses on experiments, data analysis, and development of coatings using lab equipment and raw materials knowledge.

Responsibilities include formulating and testing coatings, supporting scale-up, delivering presentations, and collaborating with chemists and technicians.

Qualifications

  • Legal authorization to work in the United States.
  • Associate degree or prior Sherwin-Williams technologist experience.
  • Must be able to tint colors and match customer requests.
  • Proven project management skills.
  • Computer literacy for data input and analysis.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint).

Responsibilities

  • Communicate effectively with managers, peers, and stakeholders; deliver presentations as needed.
  • Develop, process, apply, cure, and test new powder coating products.
  • Support scale-up and manufacturing of new products.
  • Analyze data to identify trends and resolve issues.
  • Lead projects with supervisor or mentor chemist.
  • Plan timelines and resource needs for project work.
  • Learn about materials, instrumentation, extrusion, additives, and substrates to improve coatings.
  • Provide data to resolve field and material issues and support new developments.
  • Utilize SDS and raw material management systems and follow safety policies.

The R&D Technologist will work extensively in the Heavy Equipment market segment supporting Powder coating technologies. In this role, the associate will be accountable for conducting experiments, recording results, gaining basic knowledge of raw materials and powder coating technologies, using lab equipment to prepare powder samples, and various other activities related to developing powder coatings.

Job Description

The R&D Technologist will work extensively in the Heavy Equipment market segment supporting Powder coating technologies. In this role, the associate will be accountable for conducting experiments, recording results, gaining basic knowledge of raw materials and powder coating technologies, using lab equipment to prepare powder samples, and various other activities related to developing powder coatings. Job duties include contact with other employees and access confidential and proprietary information and/or other items of value, and such access may be supervised or unsupervised. The Company therefore has determined that a review of criminal history is necessary to protect the business and its operations and reputation and is necessary to protect the safety of the Company’s staff, employees, and business relationships.

Responsibilities
  • Communicating effectively and promptly with managers, peers, and other stakeholders. This includes delivering formal and informal presentations as needed.
  • Hands-on development: formulating, processing, applying, curing, and testing of new powder coating products.
  • Participating in support of scale-up and manufacturing of new products.
  • Analyzing data to identify trends, resolve customer issues, and assess information for project advancement.
  • Leading projects with support from supervisor and/or a mentor chemist.
  • Establishing timelines and identifying resource needs to support project work.
  • Gaining knowledge/skills with raw materials, instrumentation, extrusion, additives, and substrates to develop superior performance coatings and perform troubleshooting when problems arise.
  • Providing timely and accurate data to help resolve field complaints, raw material issues, manufacturing problems, and support existing and new product development
  • Use of SDS and raw materials management system
  • Adherence to safety policies and laboratory documentation.
  • May directly work with chemists or technicians to support team project goals.
Qualifications

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

  • Must be legally authorized to work in the country of employment without needing sponsorship for employment work visa status now or in the future (e.g., OPT, CPT, H1B, EB-1,etc.)
  • Associate’s degree in a Science, Technology, Engineering or Math field OR prior experience as a Sherwin Williams Technologist.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Must be able, with or without reasonable accommodation, to determine the difference between colors so you can correctly tint paint to the colors desired by customers.
  • Proven project management skills
  • Computer knowledge for basic inputting, communication, and data analysis
  • Must be proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, Power Point)
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in powder coating research and development
  • Experience working in a laboratory environment
  • Experience in powder and/or liquid coating application

Travel Requirements: 10%

This position is not eligible for sponsorship for work authorization now or in the future, including conversion to H-1B visa.

This position is also eligible for bonus based on performance and subject to the terms of the Company’s applicable plans.
