Job summary

Sherwin‑Williams is seeking a Chemist to lead Aerospace toner development, manage new product creation and reformulation on a cross‑functional team. You will ensure color repeatability, manufacturability and quality while collaborating with Production, Marketing and Color teams.

The role emphasizes applying coatings science to aerospace applications, following the PCG Stage‑Gate process and delivering on ambitious product goals.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in a Science, Technology, Engineering or Math field required.
  • 3 years of coatings formulation experience in an industrial setting.
  • Knowledge of structure‑property relationships in automotive/oem/aerospace coatings.
  • Proficient with Outlook and Microsoft Office tools (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).

Responsibilities

  • Lead development projects of moderate to high complexity within the Automotive Toner Team with supervision.
  • Develop new products and modify existing formulations to improve quality and customer experience.
  • Apply coatings technology to address supply disruptions and improve manufacturability and color repeatability.
  • Ensure timely completion of product development goals and deliver results.
  • Provide technical support to Production, Marketing, Color, and other internal stakeholders.
  • Identify formula and process adjustments and relevant test methods from experiments.
  • Design and execute experiments, test paint samples, analyze data, decide next steps.

The chemist in this role will be responsible for leading projects focusing on Aerospace toner development. This position will be accountable for new Product development and reformulation of existing products as identified by project stakeholders.

Responsibilities
  • Independently lead development projects of moderate to high complexity within the Automotive Toner Team, with moderate supervision.
  • Responsible for developing new products and modification of existing products to improve quality and enhance customer experience.
  • Apply proven coatings technology to address supply disruptions, improve manufacturability, and color repeatability.
  • Contribute to team success by ensuring timely completion of product development goals.
  • Provide technical support and collaboration to internal stakeholders including Production, Marketing, Color and others as needed.
  • Identify and implement formula and process adjustments, including relevant test methods, based on experimental findings.
  • Design and execute experiments using the scientific method; prepare and test paint samples, analyze data, and determine next steps based on results.
  • Follow the PCG Stage‑Gate process for new product development.
  • Contribute effectively within a cross‑functional team environment.
  • Deliver results using established laboratory practices and professional standards.
  • Maintain a safe and organized work area in accordance with all laboratory safety protocols and procedures.
Qualifications
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the country for which you are applying for employment (without now or in the future needing sponsorship for employment work visa and/or permanent residence status).
  • Bachelor’s degree in a Science, Technology, Engineering or Math field.
  • 3 years of coatings formulation experience in an industrial setting.
  • Knowledge of structure‑property relationship as it pertains to automotive refinish, OE Interior, or aerospace coatings.
  • Proficient at using Outlook and Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • Must be able, with or without reasonable accommodation, to determine the difference between colors so you can correctly tint paint to the colors desired by customers.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master’s Degree or higher in a science related area
  • 5 years of coatings formulation experience
  • 3 years of Automotive/Aerospace coatings experience
  • Knowledge of color science and pigment dispersion techniques
  • Prior experience formulating and processing pigment dispersions
  • Demonstrated experience utilizing DFSS tools
  • Experience operating paint processing equipment (mills)
  • Understands Voice of the Customer
  • Project leadership

Travel Requirements: 10%

Successful candidate will be required to sign an Employee Restrictive Covenant Agreement where permitted by law.
