Job summary

Toyota Automated Logistics is seeking an R&D Software Engineer to shape autonomous robotics software from low-level hardware control to high-level autonomy and perception. You’ll work on real robots, ship real code, and help launch new automation products globally.

Our team spans Boise, Dallas, and Indianapolis, offering full-stack robotics development across the software stack with strong mentorship and a healthy work-life balance.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in CS/Engineering or similar field.
  • Minimum 3 years of relevant experience.
  • Experience designing and implementing production software systems.
  • Experience with Agile development and SOPs.
  • Expert in Linux environments and Linux-based development.
  • Proficiency in C/C++ and Python; experience with web/SQL is a plus.
  • Experience with CI/CD and testing methodologies.
  • Experience with containerization and deployment strategies.
  • Experience with version control (Git).
  • Experience with ROS (Robot Operating System).
  • Experience with low-level communication interfaces (TCP/IP, Sockets, CAN).
  • Experience with embedded systems/microcontrollers and robotics tech.

Responsibilities

  • Contribute to ROS-based C++ and Python codebases on Linux.
  • Create software designs, host design reviews, and engage in SDLC processes.
  • Engage in scoping, planning, and scheduling in an Agile workflow.
  • Develop best practices and SOPs for software development.
  • Create test plans and perform hands-on testing on live robots and hardware.
  • Uphold safety standards when interacting with live equipment.
  • Participate in field trials and beta deployments with customers.
  • Collaborate with other Toyota Automated Logistics units through the release process.
  • Lead design and implementation of software systems as needed.

Toyota Automated LogisticsR&D is the New Product Development (NPD)division of the company. Our mission is to develop original products that expand Toyota Automated Logistics'automation capabilities, enabling our commissioning and systems teams to deliver integrated solutions that give our customers a competitive edge.

Your Mission

As a Software Engineer on our R&D team, you’llhelp architect and implement the software that enables our robots to think, move, and interact in the real world. You’llwork closely with teammates across disciplines to build solutions that are both technically robust andpractically deployable— from early design through to testing and real-world operation.

You’llbe expected to take strongownershipof your work. You'll have the opportunity to lead the design and implementation ofsoftwaresystems, while also engaging in pair programming,designprocesses, andcode reviewsthat are core to our engineering culture. You’llget hands‑on with real hardwareand test your code on live systems.

In this role, you won’t just build software. You’llhelp shape how our systems behave in the real world, with the support of a team that values both innovation and thoughtful execution.

Job Functions
  • Contribute directly to ROS-based C++ and Python codebases, running on Linux systems.
  • Createsoftware designs, hostdesignand code reviews, and engage with SDLC processes.
  • Engage in scoping, planning, and scheduling your work in anAgile workflow.
  • Engage in, and help drive,best practices and SOPs for software development.
  • Create test plans and engage in hands‑on testing and verification on live Robots & Hardware.
  • Uphold our safety standards when interacting with live equipment.
  • Participate in field trials and customer on‑site Betadeployments as we release new products.
  • Work with other Toyota Automated Logisticsbusiness units throughout the release process of R&D products (Manufacturing, Commissioning, Marketing, etc).
Travel Requirements
  • Up To 10% overnight travel (Travel expenses paid by Toyota Automated Logistics)
Required Qualifications And Preferred Skills
  • BachelorsDegree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or similar field
  • Minimum 3 years of relevant experience
  • Experiencedesigning and implementing production software systems.
  • Experience with Agile development environments and a strong drive for SOPs.
  • Expert in Linux environment anddevelopingforLinux systems.
  • Expertisein C/C++ and Python, Experience with other software technologies (Web Development, SQL, etc.).
  • ExperiencewithCI/CD and testing methodologies and implementation.
  • Experience with Containerization and Deployment Strategies.
  • Experience with version control systems, GIT preferred.
  • Experience with ROS (Robot Operating System).
  • Experience with low-level communication interfaces – TCP/IP, Sockets, CAN, CANOpen.
  • Experience developing for, or interfacing with, embedded systems and microcontrollers.
  • Experience with Robotics technologies (Motor Controllers, Lidars, Encoders, and various sensor technologies).
  • Exposure to, or development experiencewith, Autonomous Navigation Systems.
  • Must be eligible to work in the USA long term without sponsorship.
