Job summary

Penn State University’s Applied Research Laboratory (ARL) in State College, PA seeks a Mechanical Research and Development Engineer to advance designs, materials, and fabrication methods across ceramics, metals, and composites.

The role involves machining, testing, system integration, and operation of Cold Spray and related deposition technologies within a collaborative, lab-focused environment. Strong GD&T, welding, and electrical wiring skills are highly valued.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering or Science; 4+ years related experience.
  • Strong machining foundation including CNC and manual machining.
  • Experience with different materials, repair/maintenance tech, robotics, scheduling, logistics and program/job planning.
  • Understanding of mechanical and electrical systems in an industrial environment.
  • Laboratory testing and ability to follow test procedures and standards.
  • Welding and sheet metal fabrication.
  • Electrical wiring (AC/DC) and GD&T interpretation.
  • General equipment maintenance and preventative maintenance.
  • Lab safety and machine shop best practices.

Responsibilities

  • Provide input to sample production and support equipment setup for Cold Spray.
  • Fabricate, machine, characterize, and test materials for projects.
  • Meet with engineers to define task scope, schedule, and resource needs.
  • Fabricate specimens and equipment, document parameters and processes.
  • Operate and maintain Cold Spray, ADD Manufacturing, and welding deposition systems.
  • Inspect, test, and calibrate equipment; perform facility maintenance.
  • Assist senior staff in gathering and archiving test data.
  • Develop documentation of procedures and process evaluation.
