Job description

Join to apply for the R&D Manager role at Centurisk

At Centurisk, we’re redefining how public entities manage risk. Our flagship platform, RiskStar, helps state agencies and public‑sector risk pools simplify property data management, streamline policy administration, and make informed decisions to protect the communities they serve. We’re embarking on a major transformation, modernizing the foundation of RiskStar to make it faster, smarter, and even more adaptable to the evolving needs of our customers.

Maintaining and strengthening our current architecture will be just as important as building what comes next. As a player coach, you’ll play a key role in shaping that transformation—ensuring RiskStar remains stable and reliable today while evolving toward its next‑generation architecture. You’ll architect and build core components of our future platform, lead ongoing maintenance and optimization of our .NET Core environment, and directly improve performance, reliability, and scalability across both legacy and new systems. Working within a small, high‑impact team, your work will drive innovation and operational excellence to help us deliver new capabilities to market faster than ever before.

Additionally, as a member of our Product Strategy Team, you’ll collaborate with Product Management, Technology Operations, and company leadership to inform our roadmap, translate business needs into technical direction, and ensure engineering decisions align with customer and company priorities.

What You’ll Achieve
  • Architect and Build for Our Customers: You'll collaborate with product managers, designers, and even join customer demos to design, build, and operate highly scalable microservices. You'll be empowered to translate user feedback directly into technical architecture, ensuring we're not just building things right, but building the right things.
  • Shape the Future of RiskStar: You’ll lead our development team at a pivotal moment as we prepare to modernize RiskStar’s architecture and evolve it into a truly cloud‑native platform. Working closely with technology operations and product leaders, you’ll help lay the technical foundation for what comes next, bringing fresh ideas, shaping our approach, and influencing the decisions that will define the next generation of our product.
  • Support and Evolve the Current Platform: Maintain and enhance our existing .NET Core‑based architecture, ensuring reliability, security, and performance as we modernize. Lead efforts to refactor, optimize, and stabilize critical services while planning smooth transitions to new systems.
  • Pioneer AI‑Driven Development: Lead the charge in leveraging modern AI tools (like GitHub Copilot, Amazon Q Developer, ChatGPT, Playwright, etc.) to accelerate our entire development lifecycle. You'll research and integrate new AI coding assistants and, just as importantly, mentor the team in best practices for prompt engineering and quality control, helping define what it truly means to be an AI‑first engineering team.
  • Drive CI/CD Innovation: Design and continually improve our build, test, and deployment pipelines to accelerate developer velocity, reliability, and feedback loops. Partner with Technology Operations to maintain secure and automated delivery to production.
  • Lead and Mentor: Drive technical excellence across the team by leading design reviews, setting coding standards, and actively mentoring entry‑ and mid‑level engineers to help them grow their careers.
  • Champion Engineering Excellence: Uphold high standards of code quality, testing, and documentation to ensure every R&D build is reliable, secure, and ready for production use. Work with Technology Operations to ensure each release meets quality, performance, and readiness standards before deployment. Support post‑release validation and rapid resolution of issues.
What We’re Looking For
  • A Customer‑Obsessed Builder: You have a passion for understanding user needs and can translate feedback from customer demos directly into elegant, scalable technical solutions.
  • A Natural Mentor and Communicator: You thrive on a collaborative, remote‑first team. You can clearly articulate complex ideas and are energized by mentoring other engineers to help them grow.
  • A Seasoned Cloud‑Native Engineer: You have 5+ years of experience designing, building, and shipping complex microservice systems in a cloud environment (like AWS, GCP, or Azure). You have a deep understanding of the principles behind containerization and orchestration.
  • A Steward of Stability: You understand that innovation and reliability go hand in hand, and you’re as comfortable improving an existing system as you are building a new one from scratch.
  • An AI Enthusiast and Innovator: You are genuinely curious and excited about the potential of AI in software development and have hands‑on experience using AI solutions in your daily workflow.
Technical Qualifications
  • Deep knowledge of containerization (Docker), service discovery, API design (REST/gRPC), and distributed tracing/logging.
  • Proficiency in at least one statically typed language (Go, Java, C#) and one scripting language (Python, TypeScript, Bash).
  • Production CI/CD ownership (GitHub Actions, Argo CD, Tekton, or similar).
  • Strong understanding of modern software architectures and experience guiding teams through technical evolution or platform redesigns.
  • In support of maintaining our current platform, proficiency in .NET Core, Azure App Services, and legacy integration patterns. Experience maintaining production systems while planning migrations to modern architectures.
  • High EQ and the ability to collaborate effectively with cross‑functional teams and customers.
Preferred / Bonus Skills
  • Hands‑on experience with a specific container orchestration tool like Kubernetes.
  • Familiarity with service‑mesh (Istio/Linkerd), policy‑as‑code (OPA), and secure software supply chain (SLSA, SBOM).
  • Hands‑on knowledge of event‑driven patterns (Kafka, NATS) and domain‑driven design.
  • Remote‑first with flexible core hours (overlap 9 a.m.– 3 p.m. ET).
  • Comprehensive health, dental, and vision coverage.
  • Generous vacation paid learning days, and annual budget for conferences or AI tooling subscriptions.
