Job summary

The Center for Innovative Material Processing through Direct Digital Deposition (CIMP-3D) of the Applied Research Laboratory at Penn State University is seeking a highly motivated graduate student to support fundamental and applied research in metal additive manufacturing. Responsibilities include programming AM systems, conducting metallurgical tests, designing experiments, and analyzing data for reports and publications.

The role may involve government security screenings and a U.S.

Qualifications

  • Students studying engineering, materials, science, or applied physics are encouraged to apply.
  • Experience with additive manufacturing, scientific programming, LabVIEW, and/or material science is desired.

Responsibilities

  • Support machine programming and processing via directed energy deposition AM, powder bed fusion AM, and hybrid AM + 5 axis machining.
  • Assist faculty and staff with metallurgical characterization and mechanical testing of AM test coupons, data analysis, and reporting.
  • Design experiments, plan AM builds, and document results in reports or publications.
  • Support sensing, control, and analysis of AM process monitoring to accelerate product qualification.
