Job description

JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS

The Center for Innovative Material Processing through Direct Digital Deposition (CIMP-3D) of the Applied Research Laboratory, a national leader in metal Additive Manufacturing (AM), is seeking a highly motivated and creative graduate student to support fundamental and applied research related to the development and application of metal additive manufacturing.

Typical duties include:

  • Supporting machine programming and processing via directed energy deposition AM (including robot), powder bed fusion AM, and hybrid AM + 5 axis machining.
  • Assisting CIMP-3D faculty and staff with coordination and/or execution of metallurgical characterization and mechanical testing of AM test coupons, data analysis and reporting.
  • Designing experiments, planning AM builds, analyzing and documenting results in reports and/or academic publications.
  • Supporting activities related to sensing and control and analysis of additive manufacturing process monitoring to accelerate product qualification (hardware selection, sensor integration, computer programming for data acquisition and data analysis, operation of process AM simulation tools).

Students studying engineering, materials, science, or applied physics are encouraged to apply. Experience with additive manufacturing, scientific programming, LabVIEW, and/or material science is desired.

The successful candidate will work up to 20 hours/week during the fall and spring semesters and 40 hours/week during the summer. Candidate selected may be subject to a government security investigation. You must be a U.S. citizen to apply. Employment with the Applied Research Laboratory will require successful completion of a pre‑employment drug screen.
