Qualifications

  • Pursuing a PhD or Master’s degree in biomedical, mechanical, electrical, or a similar engineering discipline
  • Familiarity with physiological parameters and sensing (e.g., ECG, pulse oximetry, respiratory flow/effort)
  • Practical application of hypothesis-driven experimental design
  • Strong foundation in math and physics, with an understanding of basic statistical principles
  • Detail-oriented and diligent about maintaining a lab notebook
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, and a positive attitude
  • Comfortable working with minimal supervision

Responsibilities

  • Support early-stage research to evaluate promising technologies for wearable sensing solutions
  • Conduct user studies to collect sensor data from humans
  • Develop and execute test protocols to characterize prototypes
  • Identify and apply signal processing and analysis techniques using Python or R

About This Role:

Join Product Development at the front end of innovation, where engineers explore promising technologies for future wearable biosensing solutions. You will contribute to feasibility studies, prototype development, sensor evaluation, structured experimentation, and data analysis. You will learn how clinical needs and engineering evidence shape product decisions while building experience working through ambiguity and communicating technical findings in a regulated environment.

In this role, you will contribute directly to early-stage engineering efforts to develop wearable bio-sensors, collaborating alongside a team of multi-disciplinary engineers. You will be treated as a regular member of the engineering team, inclusive of involvement in critical projects, expectation of high-quality deliverables, and accountability for the work you do.

Responsibilities & Opportunities:

Specific job responsibilities and opportunities may include:

  • Supporting early-stage research and scientific feasibility efforts to evaluate promising technologies for incorporation into wearable sensing solutions
  • Conducting user studies to collect data from sensors on human subjects
  • Developing and executing test protocols to characterize prototypes
  • Identifying and applying various signal processing and analysis techniques to improve our understanding of data using Python or R
  • Engaging in rapid prototyping activities, e.g., using evaluation kits and creating basic 3D models in SolidWorks
  • Working with lab equipment like multi-meters, oscilloscopes, power supplies, etc.
  • Gaining exposure to the healthcare environment, particularly evaluation of clinical needs and use cases
  • Working alongside a technical team to rapidly prototype electromechanical hardware platforms or fixtures
  • Learning to be creative, flexible, and agile during research and early development stages at a medical device company
  • Contributing to generation of intellectual property
Assignment Details

This is a full-time, six-month Engineering Internship / Cooperative Education (Co-op) assignment for a current student. It offers internship-style learning, mentorship, and meaningful project work, but it is not a traditional summer internship. Candidates must be available for the full January through June 2027 assignment in San Francisco.

About You:

We are looking for an enthusiastic biomedical, mechanical, or electrical engineering student who is interested in cutting edge research in the medical device space. You should be excited about working on early-stage projects, be a quick learner, and enjoy working with a highly multidisciplinary team. You recognize the need for thoughtful, data-driven decision-making, and have strong prototyping and debugging skills to support technical feasibility studies. You have excellent engineering fundamentals, love to solve problems, and are resourceful.

Housing assistance or a housing stipend is not provided. Candidates are responsible for arranging and funding their own housing during the assignment.

Estimated Pay Range

$25.00 - $35.00
