Job summary

iRhythm Technologies, Inc. is seeking a full-time Engineering Intern in San Francisco to help turn early ideas for wearable cardiac technology into prototypes.

You will work with mechanical, research, electrical, and manufacturing partners on design, prototyping, verification, and documentation in a regulated medical device environment. This six-month CO-OP runs January through June 2027; you’ll gain hands-on experience with SolidWorks, rapid iteration (3D printing), and design control processes

Qualifications

• Pursuing a BS, MS, or PhD in Mechanical Engineering or related field.
• Experience with SolidWorks solid modeling and drawings.
• Hands-on lab experience with test fixtures and protocols.

Responsibilities

• Design mechanical components and test fixtures using SolidWorks.
• Create and maintain drawings, specs, test methods, and reports for design control and manufacturing transfer.
• Collaborate with engineering, quality, and regulatory teams on requirements and test protocols.
• Support assessment of existing designs and identify improvement opportunities.
• Assist with failure analysis of production components and field returns.

About This Role:

Join Product Development and help turn early ideas for wearable cardiac technology into physical prototypes and testable designs. You will work alongside mechanical, research, electrical, systems, quality, and manufacturing partners on activities connecting user needs, sensor performance, electromechanical design, and manufacturability. This role offers hands-on experience in mechanical design, prototyping, verification testing, failure analysis, and documentation within a regulated medical device environment. You will be treated as a regular member of the engineering team, inclusive of involvement in critical projects, expectations of high-quality deliverables, and accountability for the work you do.

Engineering Internship / Co-op Format

This is a full-time, six-month Engineering Internship / Cooperative Education (Co-op) assignment for a current student. It offers internship-style learning, mentorship, and meaningful project work, but it is not a traditional summer internship. Candidates must be available for the full January through June 2027 assignment in San Francisco.

Assignment Details

Full-time | January through June 2027 | San Francisco, California | $35.00 per hour

Housing assistance or a housing stipend is not provided. Candidates are responsible for arranging and funding their own housing during the assignment.

Responsibilities

• Design mechanical components and test fixtures using SolidWorks
• Create and maintain engineering drawings, specifications, test methods, protocols, and reports to support design control, manufacturing transfer, and regulatory documentation
• Work cross-functionally with engineering, quality, and regulatory groups to prepare or review product requirements, test methods, test protocols, and test reports.
• Support assessment of existing product or fixture designs and help identify opportunities for improvement
• Assist with failure analysis of production components, assemblies, and field returns
• Prototype and test mechanical components via rapid iteration cycles (e.g., utilize 3D printing)
• Contribute ideas that may support future product improvements or intellectual property
• Perform lab equipment setup/maintenance as necessary

About You:

You are interested in the intersection of technology and medicine and the evolving world of wearable sensors and digital health. As a versatile and well-rounded engineer, you appreciate producing mechanical designs in a collaborative environment and are willing to pitch in as needed to advance the collective goals of the team. You have a desire to gain a deep, practical understanding of how devices work and how they fail. You are creative, detail-oriented, and interested in the challenges surrounding medical device production.

Required Qualifications

• Pursuing a BS, MS, or PhD degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechanical Design, or related fields
• Experience with solid modeling and engineering drawing creation using SolidWorks
• Familiar with lab test equipment and comfortable being hands-on in a lab environment (supporting fixture builds, following test protocols)
• Detail-oriented with excellent troubleshooting and critical thinking skills
• Strong written and verbal communication skills, and a positive attitude
• Comfortable working with minimal supervision
• Values and prioritizes a supportive team environment that enables open-minded and respectful discussion
