Job summary

Sila in Alameda, CA is seeking a hands-on engineer to own design decisions for R&D hardware in chemical vapor deposition projects. Lead concept to deployment, work with external vendors, and iterate with end-users to refine designs.

Applicants should have a bachelor’s in a relevant field, practical CAD skills (SolidWorks preferred), and programming experience. The role is onsite with a 3–6 month contract and requires strong problem-solving and communication abilities.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical or Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Physics, Materials Science, or a related field.
• At least 6 months’ prior experience in academic and/or industrial R&D environments.
• Proficiency in mechanical design, CAD software (SolidWorks preferred).
• Programming experience (C, Python, .NET, or IEC 61131 PLC automation preferred).
• Knowledge of AC/DC power fundamentals, sensor/signal troubleshooting, and field wiring best practices.
• Experience with multidisciplinary technical systems such as interconnected electronic, mechanical, pneumatic, and hydraulic systems.
• Strong communication skills to surface problems constructively.

Responsibilities

• Design, build and test new R&D hardware for novel chemical vapor deposition proof-of-concept work and lead from concept to deployment.
• Collaborate with contractors, fabricators, and system integrators to get designs built and implemented.
• Iterate designs with end-users in fast learning cycles and close loops.
• Diagnose problems and perform data analysis to fix issues responsively.
• Document and hand off validated work with clear commissioning procedures and tests.
• Plan projects accurately and design hardware for flexibility and operability.
