Job Description
Building-Based Substitute Teacher
Job Goal
The building‑based substitute teacher maintains classroom discipline, continues classroom procedures, and carries out responsibilities and duties of the regular teacher, including bus duty and playground supervision. The substitute provides students with appropriate learning activities designed to help them reach their intellectual, emotional, physical, and social growth while following lesson plans and instructions left by the classroom teacher. The role enables students to develop competencies and skills to function successfully in society.
Qualifications
- Minimum 48 college credits required; bachelor’s preferred.
- Valid teaching certificate preferred.
- Minimum of 1 year experience as a substitute teacher preferred.
Reports To
Principal
Performance Responsibilities
- Rotate into various teaching positions on a daily basis and possibly throughout the day.
- Implement teacher lesson plans and administrator directives with fidelity and efficiency.
- Communicate with classroom teachers and the principal regarding expectations for student work, behavior, and lesson execution.
- Ensure the physical and emotional safety of all students.
- Ensure the teacher’s absence does not cause an interruption in classroom instruction.
- Gain familiarity with district curriculum and resources.
- Comply with all school COVID‑19 protocols and procedures.
- Attend and contribute in staff meetings and professional development activities.
- Perform supervisory duties as assigned (e.g., lunch, bus, or recess duty).
- Assist in the development of curricular materials as assigned.
- Abide by state statutes, school committee policies and regulations.
- Attend meetings and perform duties as assigned by the principal or their designee.
- Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
- Maintain accurate, complete, and correct records as required by law, district policy and administrative regulation.
- Report all suspicions of abuse and/or neglect to DCYF and the principal.
- Maintain confidentiality regarding students and staff personnel information.
- Be a positive role model for students and support the mission of the Department.
- Ability to be flexible with job assignments as needed.
- Remain current on instructional practices in education (e.g., instructional technology).
- Assume responsibility for other duties and responsibilities that may be assigned.
