Job summary

Rainmaker is seeking a Quantitative Meteorologist to bridge atmospheric science, statistics, and program design. You will develop rigorous methods to identify where cloud-seeding works best, evaluate operations, and improve real-time forecasting and decision systems.

You will own ambiguous questions, build analyses and tools, and collaborate with software engineers to automate forecasting workflows and deliver measurable outcomes for customers and stakeholders.

Qualifications

• Advanced degree in meteorology or related quantitative field or exceptional quantitative ability.
• Strong understanding of cloud and precipitation processes and numerical weather prediction.
• Experience applying statistical methods to noisy environmental data.
• Proficient in Python and scientific computing with NumPy/SciPy/pandas/xarray.
• Experience working with meteorological data (GRIB, netCDF, radar, satellite, model).
• Ability to translate questions into measurable quantitative problems.
• Experience building reproducible analyses and automated workflows.
• Strong judgment on causality, uncertainty, validation, and observational limits.
• Clear written and verbal communication across teams.
• High agency to perform analytical work personally.

Responsibilities

• Develop quantitative methods to identify, score, and rank cloud-seeding opportunities.
• Analyze historical and real-time meteorological data to understand conditions linked to success.
• Design observational studies, experiments, and analyses distinguishing intervention effects from natural variability.
• Establish honest uncertainty bounds and communicate when evidence is insufficient for causal conclusions.
• Build reusable tools for evaluating programs, including climatology, targetability, and sensitivity analyses.
• Collaborate with software engineers to automate forecasting and nowcasting workflows.
• Develop methods combining NWP, ensembles, radar, satellite, and in-situ observations for decision support.
• Define ground truth, baselines, and performance metrics for evaluation systems.
• Translate meteorology concepts into ML-ready features and labels.
• Work with ML and software engineers on hybrid approaches while ensuring meteorological validity.
• Produce analyses supporting proposals, program design, and operational reviews.
• Create feedback loops between forecasting, field operations, and model development.
