Job summary

Bayer in Chesterfield, Missouri seeks a Quantitative Genetics Scientist to lead discovery research using data science, genomics, and advanced modeling to deliver improved germplasm and data packages for Product Design.

You will design breeding cohorts, support Precision Breeding innovations, and work with cross-functional teams to optimize genetic evaluation, data acquisition, and pipelines, while upholding HSE and compliance.

Job description

As a Quantitative Genetics Scientist, you conduct key quantitative genetics discovery research to deliver improved workflows, high‑quality lines, data packages, and prescriptions to the Product Design pipeline using the latest innovations in data science, genomics, quantitative genetics, computational biology, bioinformatics, and advanced genotypic, phenotypic, and environmental modeling; In this role, you execute the population and quantitative genetics technical strategy to design improved cohorts of germplasm aligned with Product Concept targets from initial crossing through handoff to Product Development, while supporting the implementation of Precision Breeding technical innovations in Product Design; You contribute strong technical expertise to breeding program design and optimization, breeding goal definition, optimization of automated crossing processes, genetic evaluation, and optimization of data acquisition, and you help identify key opportunities for new technology implementation and process improvement, all while supporting a collaborative, innovative, design‑centric culture and upholding Bayer’s Health, Safety & Environment, Compliance, Business Conduct, and Human Rights policies.Your Tasks And Responsibilities The primary responsibilities of this role, Quantitative Genetics Scientist, are to;

  • Conduct quantitative genetics discovery research projects to deliver better workflows, high‑quality lines, robust data packages, and actionable prescriptions to the Product Design pipeline;
  • Apply the latest innovations in data science, genomics, quantitative genetics, computational biology, bioinformatics, and advanced genotypic, phenotypic, and environmental modeling to support Product Design objectives;
  • Execute the population and quantitative genetics technical strategy to design improved cohorts of germplasm that are aligned with Product Concept targets from initial crossing through handoff to Product Development;
  • Support quantitative genetics projects focused on the implementation of Precision Breeding technical innovations in Product Design;
  • Contribute strong technical expertise to quantitative genetics research projects related to breeding program design and optimization, breeding goal definition, optimization of automated crossing processes, genetic evaluation, and optimization of data acquisition for Product Design;
  • Identify key areas of opportunity for new technology implementation and/or process improvement in quantitative genetics and breeding workflows;
  • Positively contribute to a collaborative, innovative, and design‑centric culture within the Product Design and broader R&D organization;
  • Support and promote Health, Safety & Environment (HSE), Compliance, Business Conduct, and Human Rights policies and culture at the site.
WHO YOU ARE Bayer seeks an incumbent who possesses the following;
  • Currently enrolled in a PhD program with experience in developing population and quantitative genetics methods for routine use in breeding programs;
  • Demonstrated experience working collaboratively in cross‑functional and cross‑cultural teams to achieve common goals;
  • Demonstrated experience leading and influencing activities of cross‑functional teams without direct reporting relationships;
  • Ability to lead and influence key stakeholders through challenges and opportunities, facilitating solutions and driving alignment;
  • Strong results orientation with demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects and priorities simultaneously;
  • Demonstrated ability to perform data analysis with large biological datasets is a plus;
  • Intermediate or advanced coding experience in R;
  • Experience in coding, delivering, and utilizing models, algorithms, and systems in at least one of the following areas;
    • Breeding program design and optimization;
    • Breeding goal definition;
    • Optimization of automated crossing processes;
    • Genetic evaluation;
    • Optimization of data acquisition at scale in plant or animal breeding programs;
  • Practice in building linear mixed models for agricultural data analysis and genomic prediction.
Employees can expect to be paid a salary of approximately between $22.75 to $47.75. Additional compensation may include a bonus or commission (if relevant). Additional benefits may include health care, vision, dental, retirement, PTO, sick leave, etc (if relevant).
