Job summary

Abbott is seeking a Quality Engineer at the Altavista, VA nutrition plant to help ensure product quality and compliance with FDA and OSHA standards. You’ll work with cross-functional teams to identify defects, develop quality plans, and drive process improvements across manufacturing operations.

You will lead data-driven investigations, contribute to risk analyses, and mentor less experienced staff while supporting release criteria and training materials.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field or equivalent education/experience.
  • Minimum two years related work experience.
  • Working technical knowledge of concepts, practices and procedures.
  • General understanding of business unit function.

Responsibilities

  • Identify and control manufacturing process defects by root-cause analysis and corrective actions.
  • Support data queries and bounding for complex releases.
  • Develop product quality plans and specifications with cross-functional teams.
  • Create risk analyses and FMEAs.
  • Develop process monitoring to reduce variation and defects.
  • Lead process improvement and analyze quality metrics.
  • Assist in creating Quality Tools and training materials.
  • Build internal and external networks to complete tasks.
  • May lead a moderate project team.
  • Provide guidance to junior staff and mentor.
  • Influence peers and management.
  • Plan and organize daily work to meet schedules.
  • Exercise judgment within defined limits.
  • Failure to achieve results may delay programs and use more resources.

What You’ll Work On

  • Identify and control Manufacturing process defects (scrap, nonconforming material, customer complaints) by participating in efforts/teams focused on identifying the primary root causes and implementing corrective and preventative actions.

  • May be responsible for querying & bounding data to support implementation of complex & documenting release criteria.

  • Develop product quality plans, documents and systems by creating product specifications, quality specifications and quality plans in conjunction with other product development team members.

  • May be responsible for creating risk analyses and FMEAs.

  • Develop Process Monitoring Systems by identifying critical process steps applying methods to reduce process variation in order to reduce/eliminate the cause of defects.

  • Lead process improvement efforts by identifying methods to capture quality metric data and by performing appropriate analysis methods to enhance sustaining product design and new product development.

  • Assist in creation of Quality Tools & Training Materials by understanding the limitations of existing quality tools and training materials, and by helping to identify more effective tools & materials.

  • Cultivate a wide range of internal networks and begin to develop an extensive external network of resources to facilitate completion of tasks.

  • May lead a project team of moderate scope.

  • Provide guidance to less experienced staff.

  • Act as a mentor to lower level individual contributors.

  • Influence exerted at peer level and occasionally at first levels of management.

  • Plan, organize, and prioritize own daily work routine to meet established schedule.

  • Exercise authority and judgment within defined limits to determine appropriate action.

  • Failure to achieve results or erroneous decisions or recommendations may cause delays in program schedules and may result in the allocation of additional resources.

You’ll be accountable for meeting our compliance standards including FDA, OSHA and Abbott policies and procedures.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field or an equivalent combination of education and work experience

  • Minimum two years related work experience with a good understanding of specified functional area.

  • Working technical knowledge and application of concepts, practices and procedures.

  • General understanding of business unit/group function.

The base pay for this position is

$61,300.00 – $122,700.00
