Job description

Quality Engineer- Mobile, Audience Experience
Quality Engineer, Mobile, Audience Experience

About This Role

As a Quality Engineer at BibleProject, you empower teams to ship reliable, secure, and performant software by embedding quality practices throughout the development lifecycle. You lead with automation and observability, design for testability, and partner with Engineers, Product, and Design to shift quality left so that defects are prevented, not just detected. You'll design, build, and own the app's automation suite, identify where coverage is needed across the test pyramid and partner with engineers to close the gaps, and use production signals to target risk — bringing demonstrated experience driving quality for production software at scale.

The App squad owns the BibleProject mobile app, where our audience reads and studies Scripture, often in community. Quality is what makes that experience trustworthy, and mobile makes that its own kind of challenge: the app has to hold up offline or on a weak connection, across a wide range of iOS and Android devices. You'll be the quality owner and anchor for this squad, working independently and shaping how we build for quality early rather than waiting to be handed test cases. That matters especially right now: we're building toward the future of the app, and testability is still something we can shape as we go. Manual testing here is targeted exploratory discovery — the critical and edge cases, the accessibility gaps, the things automation won't catch — rather than high-volume regression.

Most importantly, you'll be an integral part of maturing the product engineering culture of BibleProject, setting and maintaining a high bar with regard to our standards and people, and working to create an environment where great technical professionals like yourself can ship work worthy of our mission at a sustainable pace that reflects the BibleProject values: creative, humble, thoughtful, unifying, generous, and unhurried.

Core Functions

Leadership

  • Own the App squad's automation suite and quality roadmap independently — build, maintain, and evolve it without ongoing pairing support.
  • Own test strategy across the pyramid: identify where tests are needed — unit, component, integration, end-to‑end — and partner with engineers to close gaps, influencing scope and sequencing based on risk and user impact.
  • Champion shift‑left practices: drive testability in design reviews and codify quality engineering standards and patterns.
  • Partner with Product, Design, DevOps, and Data to define testable acceptance criteria (usability, accessibility, offline/edge‑case behavior) and align on SLOs and release readiness.
  • Drive continuous improvement: identify bottlenecks in CI/CD, observability, and environments, and deliver measurable fixes.

Responsibilities

  • Build and maintain the automation suite with durable patterns, stable test data, and reliable test environments across iOS and Android.
  • Track coverage gaps as the product evolves, and partner with engineers to get unit and component‑level tests written and maintained in the codebase.
  • Integrate tests into CI/CD with clear gates, fast feedback, and actionable reporting, driving down flaky failures over time.
  • Plan and execute targeted exploratory testing on critical flows, new designs, and edge cases — offline/poor‑connectivity behavior, accessibility gaps, and other issues automation won't catch — documenting reproducible steps and user impact.
  • Establish, track, and improve quality signals (defect rate, change‑failure rate, test stability, coverage depth, crash‑free rate); validate releases using production signals and lead post‑release verification for high‑risk launches.

Expertise

  • Mobile test automation: hands‑on building and maintaining mobile UI automation suites from durable, maintainable patterns rather than one‑offs; experience with Appium and the Page Object Model is a plus.
  • Observability and analysis: using logs, metrics, traces, and crash reporting to validate behavior and identify defects quickly.
  • Mobile quality judgment: offline and poor‑connectivity correctness, behavior across a wide device range, mobile performance budgets and their user impact, and the release constraints of shipping through app stores.
  • Product fluency for mobile: fluent in iOS and Android conventions, able to identify and articulate why something that technically passes still violates expected user experience.
  • UX, accessibility, and AI‑assisted quality: practical accessibility techniques for mobile and qualitative usability methods, plus comfort using AI‑assisted tools to generate test ideas and data, summarize signals, and draft reports with human review and privacy‑safe handling.

What We're Looking For

  • 5+ years of experience (or equivalent skill) building and maintaining automated tests and quality tooling in a product team, including production software at scale.
  • Demonstrated ability to build and own a mobile automation suite independently — designing stable tests, integrating them into a delivery pipeline, and driving down flakiness — without ongoing pairing support.
  • Track record of risk‑based coverage analysis: identifying where tests add the most value across a product and partnering with engineers to close gaps.
  • Proven experience using production signals and observability to guide testing strategy and risk mitigation.
  • Demonstrated ability to translate usability, accessibility, and performance expectations into testable acceptance criteria.
  • Track record of surfacing blockers early and driving them to resolution without recurring escalation.
  • Track record of giving and incorporating feedback, with demonstrated growth in scope of ownership over time.
  • Alignment with BibleProject's mission and values.
