Job summary

Smith+ Nephew in Pittsburgh, PA, is seeking an enthusiastic Data Scientist to join the Quality team. You will apply advanced analytics and machine learning to improve product quality and optimize processes, collaborating with R&D, Regulatory, Marketing, Manufacturing, and IT.

Key responsibilities include building dashboards, performing root cause analyses, and developing predictive models for defect detection and process optimization.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Data Science, Statistics, Computer Science, or a related field. Master's degree preferred but not required.
  • Typically 0 to 3 years of experience through internships, co ops, academic research, or professional experience in data science, statistics, process improvement, or quality improvement.
  • Strong analytical, statistical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Proficiency with Python, R, and/or SQL.
  • Experience with data visualization tools such as Power BI or Tableau.
  • Understanding of quality methodologies including SPC, FMEA, and Six Sigma.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills with the ability to work across multiple functions.
  • Exposure to regulated industries such as medical devices, life sciences, or healthcare is preferred.
  • Willingness to travel up to 10%.

Responsibilities

  • Collect, clean, analyze, and interpret quality related data from multiple internal systems to identify trends and improvement opportunities.
  • Develop and maintain dashboards, reports, and visualizations that support quality performance monitoring and decision making.
  • Support root cause investigations and CAPA activities through advanced analytical and statistical techniques.
  • Build and enhance predictive models for defect detection, process optimization, productivity improvement, and quality monitoring.
  • Explore and apply machine learning and open-source models to support quality and operational excellence initiatives.
  • Partner with cross functional teams across R&D, Regulatory, Marketing, Manufacturing, and IT to drive data driven quality improvements.
  • Document, standardize, and maintain data workflows to ensure consistency, reproducibility, and compliance.
  • Participate in audits and provide data driven insights to support quality and compliance activities.
  • Handle and analyze large datasets while identifying opportunities for continuous improvement.
