Job summary

One Stop Systems, Inc. in San Diego, CA, is seeking a hands-on Quality Engineer who moves between suppliers, incoming inspection, manufacturing quality, drawing interpretation, corrective action, and continuous improvement.

You will work with Suppliers, Engineering, Manufacturing and Operations to solve problems and improve product quality, supporting AS9100D/ISO 9001 and leading containment, SCARs and RCA.

Qualifications

  • 3–5 years of relevant quality engineering experience in a manufacturing environment.
  • Practical experience working within AS9100 and/or ISO 9001 quality management systems.
  • Experience with supplier quality, nonconformance management, root-cause analysis, corrective actions, and cross-functional problem solving.
  • Hands-on inspection with mechanical/electro-mechanical components and precision measuring equipment.

Responsibilities

  • Support supplier, receiving, in-process, and final product quality for electro-mechanical assemblies and related hardware.
  • Perform and support First Article Inspections (FAIs/FAIRs) per AS9102.
  • Read and interpret engineering drawings, GD&T, tolerances, and customer quality requirements.
  • Investigate nonconformances and supplier escapes using structured problem solving (5 Why, 8D).
  • Coordinate with suppliers and Supply Chain on containment, SCARs, and corrective actions.

Position Overview

OSS is seeking a hands-on Quality Engineer who is comfortable moving between suppliers, incoming inspection, manufacturing quality, drawing interpretation, corrective action, and continuous improvement. This role works directly with suppliers, Engineering, Manufacturing, and Operations to solve problems and improve product quality.

Reporting Relationships

The Quality Engineer will report to the Quality Assurance Manager.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Support supplier, receiving, in-process, and final product quality for electro-mechanical assemblies, computer/server systems, sheet-metal and machined components, PCBs, PCBAs, cables, chassis, enclosures, and related hardware.
  • Perform and support First Article Inspections (FAIs/FAIRs) in accordance with AS9102 and review supplier-provided FAIR documentation.
  • Read and interpret engineering drawings, specifications, tolerances, basic GD&T, surface-finish requirements, workmanship standards, drawing revisions, and customer quality requirements.
  • Perform hands-on dimensional and visual inspection using calipers, micrometers, height gauges, pin gauges, thread gauges, go/no-go gauges, microscopes, surface plates, and other appropriate inspection equipment.
  • Evaluate mechanical and electronic assemblies for dimensional compliance, fit and function, workmanship, cosmetic defects, plating/coating issues, solder quality, component orientation, connector installation, contamination, and other manufacturing defects.
  • Investigate nonconformances, supplier escapes, production defects, customer complaints, returns, and field failures using structured problem solving such as 5 Why, Fishbone/Ishikawa, 8D, and corrective action.
  • Work directly with suppliers and Supply Chain on containment, SCARs, corrective actions, supplier performance, First Article requirements, and improvement activities.
  • Support the AS9100D / ISO 9001 quality management system, including audits, calibration, document control, quality metrics, traceability, risk-based thinking, and continuous improvement.
  • Analyze quality data and partner with Engineering and Operations to reduce defects, scrap, rework, supplier escapes, and recurring quality issues.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Manufacturing, Industrial Technology, Quality, or a related technical field, or an equivalent combination of education, technical training, and relevant experience.
  • 3–5 years of relevant quality engineering, supplier quality, manufacturing quality, inspection, or manufacturing-engineering experience in a manufacturing environment.
  • Practical experience working within an AS9100 and/or ISO 9001 certified quality management system.
  • Experience with supplier quality, nonconformance management, root-cause analysis, corrective actions, and cross-functional problem solving.
  • Hands-on inspection experience with mechanical and/or electro-mechanical components and precision measuring equipment.
  • Ability to read mechanical engineering drawings and apply dimensions, tolerances, and basic GD&T concepts; experience with First Article Inspection and FAIR documentation.
  • Working knowledge of manufacturing processes such as machining, sheet-metal fabrication, plating/coatings, assembly, electronics, PCB/PCBA manufacturing, soldering, conformal coating, or ESD controls.
  • Strong communication, analytical, and organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and independently follow issues through closure.
Preferred Qualifications and Certifications
  • Computer, server, high-performance computing, rugged electronics, or system-level electro-mechanical assembly.
  • Inspection of chassis, enclosures, brackets, machined parts, sheet metal, PCBAs, electronic assemblies, cables, and related hardware.
  • IPC-A-610, J-STD-001, or similar electronics-workmanship standards.
  • Quality tools such as PFMEA/FMEA, SPC, Pareto analysis, process capability, sampling plans, or control plans.
  • Aerospace, defense, medical-device, or other regulated manufacturing.
  • ASQ certification, AS9100/ISO 9001 internal-auditor training, Lean Six Sigma certification, or formal GD&T training.
  • Clear Communication Clear and effective written and verbal communication skills with the ability to deliver the appropriate level of detail.

Physical Demands

This position operates in both office and manufacturing environments. The employee is frequently required to sit, stand, walk, communicate, use a computer, and use hands to handle inspection equipment and product.
