Job summary

Symbotic in Detroit is seeking multiple levels of Quality Engineer to support our external manufacturing partners, supplier quality, engineering, and site installation teams to ensure high quality and field reliability for our systems.

The role involves analyzing field data, subsystem defects, and site quality concerns using statistical methods and structured problem solving, with travel up to 25% and a hybrid work arrangement in Detroit.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering or related field; minimum 3 years in quality engineering.
  • Experience in regulated manufacturing environments and quality tools (FMEA, 8D, DOE).
  • Proficiency with statistical software (Minitab, JMP) and advanced Excel.
  • CQE or Six Sigma Black Belt preferred; ISO 9001 or AS9100 auditor preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Manage supplier quality activities with contract manufacturers to meet Symbotic quality standards and customer requirements.
  • Lead root cause investigations using structured problem-solving methodologies (QRRC, 8D, A3, 5-Why).
  • Conduct supplier audits, assessments, and reviews to evaluate compliance and identify opportunities for improvement.
  • Support quality planning across the product lifecycle, including NPI, production readiness, and sustaining operations.
  • Monitor supplier quality performance through metrics and KPIs, identifying trends and driving improvements.
  • Travel to supplier and contract manufacturing locations as needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

What we need

We are seeking multiple levels of Quality Engineer to support our external manufacturing partners, supplier quality, engineering, and site installation teams to ensure the highest standards of quality and field reliability for our system. The ideal candidate will leverage a deep understanding of product applications and environments to strategically apply technical knowledge and methodologies for enhancing product quality. This role involves analyzing field data, subsystem/component defects, and site quality concerns using statistical and reliability methods.

This role is a hybrid role based remotely in Detroit. Selected candidates will be required to work onsite for a minimum of two days per week.

What we do

The Quality team ensures Symbotic products successfully transition from development into production by partnering cross-functionally with Engineering, Manufacturing, Supply Chain, and Test teams. Encompassing product, site, manufacturing, and supplier Quality, the team focuses on quality planning, defect prevention, and process validation from prototype through production, using product and field data to drive continuous improvement. By embedding strong quality practices early in the product lifecycle, the team helps ensure reliable product launches and consistent system performance.

What you’ll do
  • Manage supplier quality activities for assigned suppliers and contract manufacturers to ensure compliance with Symbotic quality standards and customer requirements.
  • Serve as the primary quality contact for suppliers and contract manufacturers, supporting issue resolution and ongoing quality performance.
  • Conduct supplier audits, assessments, and reviews to evaluate compliance and identify opportunities for improvement.
  • Support quality planning activities throughout the product lifecycle, including new product introduction, production readiness, and sustaining operations.
  • Lead root cause investigations and corrective actions using structured problem-solving methodologies such as QRRC, 8D, A3, and 5-Why.
  • Partner with Engineering, Supply Chain, Manufacturing, and supplier teams to resolve quality issues and prevent recurrence.
  • Monitor supplier quality performance through metrics and KPIs, identifying trends and driving improvement actions as needed.
  • Support process improvement initiatives focused on enhancing product quality, manufacturing efficiency, and supplier performance.
  • Maintain quality documentation and provide regular updates on supplier performance and quality concerns.
  • Mentor and support less experienced team members as appropriate.
  • Travel to supplier and contract manufacturing locations as needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
What you’ll need
  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering or related discipline is preferred. Related work experience is required.
  • Minimum of 3 years of quality engineering experience within a regulated manufacturing environment preferred.
  • Proficient in quality management concepts, tools, and methods (FMEA, DOE, MSA, GRR, 8D, etc.).
  • Experience with Control Plans, FMEAs, and PPAP or equivalent part approval processes.
  • Knowledge of engineering fundamentals and the ability to identify critical control points.
  • Familiarity with statistical process control software such as SAA, Minitab, and JMP, along with advanced Excel skills for data organization and analysis.
  • Strong communicative, quantitative and analytical skills with the ability to translate findings into actionable business decisions.
  • CQE and Six Sigma Black Belt certification preferred (must demonstrate deep core knowledge).
  • Certified or previously certified ISO 9001 or AS9100 auditor preferred.
  • Up to 25% of travel, both domestic and international, may be required. Employees must have a valid driver’s license and the ability to drive and/or fly to client and other customer locations.
  • The employee is responsible for owning a credit card and managing expenses personally to be reimbursed on a bi-weekly basis.

The base range for this position in the posted location is $82,000.00 - $126,000.00 however, base pay offered may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. The compensation package includes medical, dental, vision, disability, 401K, PTO and/or other benefits.
