POSITION OVERVIEW

Reporting to a team manager, the crew leader will lead the lab duties and be responsible for performance across the B shift in the quality lab. Responsibilities will include ensuring standards are being maintained, providing coaching and development opportunities to team members, facilitating and encouraging teamwork, perform analytical, chemical, and physical tests required for quality control of raw materials, in-process materials, and finished goods. Participates in sensory tasting and training activities. Participates in investigations and studies to determine cause, effect, and corrective actions required to resolve deviation from quality standards, such as routine sampling and inspection of material. The employee will adhere to safety procedures, ensure a safe work environment, meet and exceed product quality expectations, and assist in achieving process reliability goals.

RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Responsible for identifying and reporting food safety and quality concerns.
  • Sets the direction of the team and ensures overall shift performance to meet objectives for productivity, quality, safety, food safety, sanitation, GMPs, customer service, and process reliability. Coaches, trains, and ensures compliance with plant-established procedures while demonstrating a deep respect for all people's capabilities.
  • Coordinates timely quarantine and quality notification processes, including disposition of discrepant materials. Satisfies all product sample requests.
  • Researches historical records for information or investigation purposes.
  • Proactively encourages continuous improvement and daily problem-solving initiatives to increase operational effectiveness and efficiencies.
  • Ensures that all activities follow documented operating procedures, creates new ones, and recommends updates to existing guidelines as required.
  • Documents/enters crew vacation requests & overtime and works with the team manager to coordinate time management for all quality lab personnel.
  • Determines needs and conducts training required for new & existing employees.
  • Perform analytical testing & record, maintain, and review results/data in the SAP System.
  • Performs sensory taste testing as qualified and records data, maintains SAP and reviews results in SAP, and releases product(s) as appropriate.
  • Performs a variety of test methods and understands procedures and instrumentation used in completing required lab tasks.
  • Ensure product meets standards by reviewing the compliance, the necessary means and equipment are available, and that utilization of equipment available is functional and safe.
  • Performs calibration activities on equipment that require internal calibration. Resolves minor mechanical and processing problems and makes necessary adjustments to keep lab equipment running.
  • Initiates & documents Quality Notifications/DMRs/DMAs, including participating in cross-functional root cause analysis. Facilitates follow-up & resolutions.
  • Investigate and communicate root cause failure analysis related to the lab, including recommending and implementing resolutions.
  • Interpret data and give direction to the manufacturing group to ensure products meet established specifications.
  • Prepare samples of raw materials, intermediates, and finished goods to be sent out for outside testing.
  • Performs COA verification of raw materials as needed.
  • Communicates daily with Team Managers & team and follows up on corrective action assignments.
  • Maintains professionalism and flexibility in uncertain or stressful encounters.
  • Participate in the interview process, on-boarding and early development of team members.
  • Performs job tasks of other team members when necessary.
  • Holds meetings as necessary, including the shift change process.
  • Able to do problem-solving and team development and facilitate teamwork and coaching among team members.
  • Other duties as assigned.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Three years of manufacturing and industrial experience required.
  • Demonstrated ability to understand the working principles of the lab equipment and perform calibration activities.
  • Demonstrated ability to diagnose mechanical problems and resolve minor mechanical and processing issues required.
  • Demonstrated ability to understand the financial impact of business decisions affecting product releases, staffing, product components, and inventory required.
  • Demonstrated computer skills, including knowledge of Excel, Word, etc.
  • Demonstrated ability to encourage continuous improvement and daily problem-solving initiatives required proactively.
  • Strong oral and written communication and interpersonal skills required.
  • Demonstrated analytical and critical thinking skills to determine risk assessment required.
  • Ability to work overtime/weekends required.
  • Knowledge of Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs) and Good Laboratory Practices (GLPs).
  • Ability to work well under pressure while maintaining multiple priorities; able to work with minimal supervision. Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Color Vision (ability to detect color) required. This is due to the need to compare color differences in products on a daily basis.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • 4-year college degree in science (food science, chemistry, etc.).
  • Experience working in food manufacturing.
  • Working knowledge of statistics preferred.
  • Knowledge of SAP, Infinity, PowerPoint, and Access preferred.
  • Demonstrated practice of leadership principles required and formal leadership training strongly preferred.
  • Experience effectively leading and facilitating team meetings is strongly preferred.
