Job summary

UPS Industrial Services is seeking an experienced Industrial Quality Control (QC) Technician to support projects in the petrochemical and industrial sectors. This role ensures compliance with quality and safety standards, oversees documentation control, weld and flange tracking, welder certifications, and NDE requirements.

The QC Technician will mentor other inspectors and serve as a liaison between project management, client representatives, and quality leadership, requiring strong codes

Qualifications

  • High school diploma, GED, or equivalent required.
  • Minimum of 5 years of documentable inspection experience in the petrochemical, turnaround/maintenance, or comparable industry.
  • Strong ability to read and interpret P&IDs, isometrics, WPSs, PQRs, and WPQs.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and computer-based documentation systems.
  • Demonstrated ability to converse effectively with client engineers, craft personnel, and supervisory teams.
  • Ability to work extended hours, overtime, and travel as required by project needs.
  • Must pass a drug screen, background check, physical, and PFT/FIT test.
  • Valid TWIC card and reliable transportation to and from job sites.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee quality control activities for assigned areas of the project, ensuring compliance with client, company, and jurisdictional requirements.
  • Manage weld and flange tracking/mapping, verify welder certifications and performance, and oversee NDE requirements.
  • Develop, maintain, and archive weld logs, inspection records, and turnover packages.
  • Interpret and apply ASME, National Board, and other industry codes to field work.
  • Evaluate Mill Test Reports (MTRs) and support material traceability.
  • Perform inspections on piping systems, vessels, and equipment to verify proper assembly, welding quality, and pressure testing.
  • Identify and evaluate weld indications such as cracks, lack of fusion, and other defects.
  • Ensure all required documentation copies are sent to clients and UPSIS archives in a timely manner.
  • Interact with Authorized Inspectors, client representatives, and third-party inspectors.
  • Communicate effectively with UPSIS Project Managers, client representatives, and Quality Control Management.
  • Mentor other QC Inspectors, promoting knowledge transfer and best practices.
  • Support project teams in meeting quality and safety objectives, acting as a key technical resource.

About the Role

UPS Industrial Services is seeking an experienced Industrial Quality Control (QC) Technician to support our projects in the petrochemical and industrial sectors. This role is responsible for ensuring compliance with all quality and safety standards across assigned project areas. The QC Technician oversees documentation control, weld and flange tracking, welder certifications, NDE requirements, and adherence to applicable codes.

This position requires strong technical expertise, an in-depth understanding of industry codes, and a proactive commitment to safety. The QC Technician will also serve as a mentor to other QC Inspectors and act as a liaison between project management, client representatives, and quality leadership.

Key Responsibilities
Quality Control & Documentation
  • Oversee quality control activities for assigned areas of the project, ensuring compliance with client, company, and jurisdictional requirements.

  • Develop, maintain, and archive weld logs, inspection records, and turnover packages.
  • Interpret and apply ASME, National Board, and other industry codes to field work.

Inspection & Compliance
  • Perform inspections on piping systems, vessels, and equipment to verify proper assembly, welding quality, and pressure testing.

Safety & Compliance
  • Comply with UPS Industrial Services and OSHA/ANSI safety policies and procedures, including proper PPE usage and safe work practices.
  • Conduct field inspections to identify safety hazards and take corrective action to ensure a safe work environment.
  • Apply shop mathematics to solve field problems and improve work accuracy.
Qualifications and Experience
  • High school diploma, GED, or equivalent required.
  • Minimum of 5 years of documentable inspection experience in the petrochemical, turnaround/maintenance, or comparable industry.
  • Strong ability to read and interpret P&IDs, isometric drawings, WPSs, PQRs, and WPQs.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and computer-based documentation systems.
  • Demonstrated ability to converse effectively with client engineers, craft personnel, and supervisory teams.
  • Ability to work extended hours, overtime, and travel as required by project needs.
  • Must pass a drug screen, background check, physical, and PFT/FIT test.

Required Certifications (must have at least two years with an active/current certification status):
  • AWS Certified Welding Inspector (CWI)
  • API 510 Pressure Vessel Inspector
  • API 570 Piping Inspector
Key Skills
  • Expertise in welding, fabrication, flange management, and quality control systems.
  • Knowledge of hydro-testing equipment and proper pressure testing techniques.
  • Familiarity with interpreting NDE results (PT, MT, UT, RT).
  • Ability to develop and maintain accurate weld logs, flange maps, and turnover documentation.
  • Strong leadership abilities with the capacity to mentor and guide QC Inspectors.
Working Conditions
  • Environment: Outdoor/plant environment with exposure to varying weather conditions.
  • Physical Requirements: Ability to stand, walk, and inspect field work for extended periods. Must meet the physical demands of industrial site inspections.
