Job summary

CalPortland is seeking a Quality Control Technician to support our concrete plants in Kentucky. You will test concrete and aggregate samples, record results, and assist the Quality Manager in improving efficiency and product quality.

The role requires obtaining ACI Field Grade Certification within six months, ability to lift up to 75 pounds, and flexibility with hours. English proficiency and a valid driver’s license are essential.

Qualifications

  • Obtain and maintain ACI Field Grade Certification within six months in the position.
  • Must be able to speak, read, and write in English.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and be insurable.
  • May be required to perform Lab Technician duties based on business need.

Responsibilities

  • Perform stripping, curing, capping, and compression tests in the concrete lab.
  • Report concrete cylinder strength test results according to ACI standards.
  • Work with the plant operator on plant operations and efficiency.
  • Inspect Batch Plant, aggregate stockpiles, and mix designs at the assigned plant.
  • Adjust loads with concrete admixtures.
  • Sample aggregates and perform Portland cement concrete tests per ASTM, AASHTO, and DOT standards.
  • Testing to include moisture content, temperature, slump, density, air content, cylinders.
  • Troubleshoot and address material/quality issues (low breaks, Schmidt hammer, cracking, coring).
  • Enter test results daily into a computer database and distribute reports.
  • Conduct scheduled calibrations on test equipment per the calibration schedule.
  • Coordinate work with internal personnel and customers.
  • Prepare job incident reports and analyze aggregate and strength reports.

Compensation

$28 - $34/ hr

Responsibilities
  • Perform all aspects of stripping, curing, capping, and compression testing in the concrete and concrete aggregate testing lab.
  • Report concrete cylinder strength test results according to ACI standards.
  • Work with the plant operator on plant operations and efficiency
  • Inspect Batch Plant, aggregate stockpiles, and mix designs at the assigned plant
  • Ability to adjust loads with concrete admixtures
  • Sample aggregates and perform applicable Portland cement concrete tests (in accordance with the most current ASTM, AASHTO, and DOT standards)
  • Testing to include: moisture content, temperature, slump, density, air content, cylinders, etc.
  • Troubleshoot and address material/quality issues (low breaks, Schmidt hammer, cracking, coring, etc.)
  • Enter test results daily into a computer database and distribute reports to appropriate individuals
  • Conduct scheduled calibrations on test equipment per the calibration schedule
  • Coordinate work with internal personnel, i.e.sales, operations, customer service, and dispatch
  • Prepare job incident reports
  • Analyze aggregate and strength reports
  • Work directly with customers
  • Attend pre-job meetings
  • Work with plant operators, co-workers, and drivers
Education
  • High school diploma/GED
  • ATTI and ACI Field Grade 1 certified (preferred)
Requirements/Qualifications
  • Obtain and maintain ACI Field Grade Certification within six (6) months in the position
  • Job requires the following motions: climbing, bending, squatting, lifting, sitting, stretching, vibration, twisting, pushing/pulling of controls, and riding on rough terrain, use of hand tools such as wrenches and screwdrivers, driving/walking on uneven ground, and climbing stairs
  • Frequent lifting up to 75 pounds, occasional lifting of 100 pounds
  • May be exposed to extremes of hot or cold weather and be able to work in wet environments
  • Must be able to work flexible hours with varying start and stop times
  • Overtime work plus nights will be required as needed by the company
  • Must meet OSHA 10 guidelines and be able to follow all CalPortland Safety Policies
  • ANSI-approved PPE will be provided and must be used when required
  • Must be able to speak, read, and write in English
  • Able to work cooperatively with others
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and be insurable
  • Techniciansubject to random drug and alcohol screens as required by the company
  • May be required to perform Lab Technician duties based on business need
Conditions of Employment

Successful candidate must submit to a post-offer pre-employment physical examination, drug/alcohol screen, and background check. Some positions require Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) registration/clearance as well as ongoing alcohol and drug testing.
