Job summary

The Shelly Company, a CRH company, is seeking a Quality Control Technician to support testing of aggregate and asphalt mix, monitor pavement conditions during installation, and assist in mix adjustments to meet specifications.

Responsibilities include testing materials to spec, inputting data, and communicating results to paving teams, with possible night shifts and overtime. Proficiency with basic computer software and safety procedures is essential.

Qualifications

• Ability to read English language to read specifications, reports and manuals.
• Standardized laboratory tests per ASTM/AASHTO standards.
• Ability to operate a two-way radio and basic computer software such as Outlook, Word and Excel.

• Monitor quality of hot mix asphalt on specific jobs.
• Input test results into computers in laboratories and remote locations.
• Communicate test results and mix specifications to technicians and paving personnel.

• Maintain safety and adhere to company ethics and policies.
• Travel and work nights/weekends as required.

Position Overview

Conduct tests on aggregate and/or asphalt mix to determine composition and consistency with required specifications. Assist in adjustment of mix composition to ensure asphalt mix within specifications. Monitor temperature, thickness, density and overall condition of pavements during installation. Assist and make recommendations in the process of the installation of HMA. Quality Control Technicians usually perform their duties during a shift that varies with the operation of the business, may include night work, and usually involves overtime. Duties are performed under limited or no supervision.

Key Responsibilities (Essential Duties and Functions)

• Testing materials in a safe, efficient, and productive manner.
• Identify and become familiar with various mix specifications requirements.
• Monitor the quality of hot mix asphalt for and on specific jobs in a safe, efficient, and productive manner.
• Test materials to determine specific requirements such as weight, gravity, temperature, thickness, and gradation of mix components.
• Communicate with other technicians regarding mix specifications and test results.
• Input test result data into computers in laboratories and remote locations.
• Monitor the quality of hot mix asphalt pavement.
• Must use and calibrate a density meter.
• Communicate and assist paving personnel in adjusting processes to conform to specifications.
• Report and communicate test results ethically, adhering to The Shelly Company Ethics Policy.
• Must possess or have the ability to learn basic computer software skills, such as Microsoft Outlook, Word, and Excel.

Qualifications

Education and Experience

High School diploma or equal skill level. Ability to carry out standardized laboratory tests in accordance with ASTM and AASHTO standards. Knowledge and understanding of basic operating procedures and mechanics of asphalt plant. Knowledge of applicable federal, state and local regulations pertaining to, but not limited to, safety, the environment and transportation. Ability to detect safety hazards and malfunctions and respond accordingly. Ability to operate a two-way radio. Must have the ability to obtain Level 2 and/or 3 ODOT Testing Certifications within a reasonable amount of time.

Language Skills

Ability to read English language sufficiently to read information contained in specifications, reports, manuals and regulations.

Mathematical Skills

Ability to perform intermediate mathematical skills, including basic algebra, geometry, and shop math.

Reasoning Ability

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
