Job summary

CalPortland is seeking a Quality Control Lab Technician for our Superior Ready Mix location in Mission Gorge, San Diego. You will perform concrete and concrete aggregates testing and report results, ensuring strict adherence to ACI standards.

The role requires DOT and ACI certifications, ability to lift heavy materials, operate lab equipment, and collaborate with production plants and suppliers. A strong emphasis on safety, calibration, data entry, and timely reporting is essential.

Qualifications

• Must obtain ACI Concrete Strength Testing within six months
• Must obtain DOT Soil and Aggregate and/or ACI Aggregate Testing Technician Level 1 within one year
• Must be able to speak, read, and write in English

Responsibilities

• Perform stripping, curing, capping, and compression testing in the concrete and aggregate lab
• Report concrete cylinder strength test results according to ACI standards
• Process aggregate field test samples and reduce to testing size
• Conduct concrete tests including temperature, slump, density, air content, cylinders
• Perform gradation tests on rock and sand samples and related tests (durability, moisture, cleanliness, sand equivalency)
• Enter test results daily into a computer database and distribute reports
• Gather cement, fly ash, and aggregates for trial batch tests
• Weigh materials for trial batches and set up equipment for testing
• Calibrate equipment per schedule
• Maintain safe, clean work area and use PPE as required
• Troubleshoot problems and handle out-of-spec issues with aggregates

The Quality Control Lab Technician will perform quality control testing and reporting duties in the concrete and concrete aggregates testing laboratory. This position is for our Superior Ready Mix Location in Mission Gorge, San Diego.

Compensation

$58,000.00 - $70,000.00 DOE

Responsibilities

• Perform all aspects of stripping, curing, capping, and compression testing in the concrete and concrete aggregates testing lab
• Report concrete cylinder strength test results according to ACI standards
• Process aggregate field test samples and reduce to the appropriate testing size
• Concrete testing to include temperature, slump, density, air content, cylinders, etc.
• Perform gradation tests on rock and sand samples along with additional tests such as durability, moisture, cleanliness value, #200 wash, sand equivalency, specific gravities, and absorptions
• Enter test results daily into a computer database and distribute reports to appropriate individuals
• Gather cement, fly ash, and aggregate materials at production plants in preparation for concrete trial batch tests
• Accurately weigh up each material as listed in the trial batch sheets and set up equipment for trial testing
• Conduct scheduled calibrations on test equipment per the calibration schedule
• Always maintain work area and office equipment in a safe and clean condition
• Troubleshoot job problems and handle job complaints (out-of-spec aggregates, low breaks, Schmidt hammer, cracking, coring)
• Analyze aggregate and strength reports and identify trends
• Work directly with suppliers, vendors, and internal customers, as necessary

Education

• DOT Soils and Aggregate Certification
• ACI Strength Testing Certification and ACI Aggregate Testing Technician Level 1

Requirements/Qualifications

• Obtain and maintain the following:
• ACI Concrete Strength Testing (within six (6) months in position)
• DOT Soil and Aggregate and/or ACI Aggregate Testing Technician Level 1 (within 1 year in position)
• Job requires the following motions: climbing, bending, squatting, lifting, sitting, stretching, vibration, twisting, pushing/pulling of controls, and riding on rough terrain, use of hand tools such as wrenches and screwdrivers, driving/walking on uneven ground, and climbing stairs
• Frequent lifting up to 75 pounds, occasional lifting of 100 pounds
• May be exposed to extremes of hot or cold weather and be able to work in wet environments
• Must be able to work flexible hours with varying start and stop times
• Overtime work will be required as needed by the company
• Must meet OSHA 10 guidelines and be able to follow all CalPortland Safety Policies
• ANSI-approved PPE will be provided and must be used when required
• Must be able to speak, read, and write in English
• Able to work cooperatively with others
• Must have a valid driver's license and be insurable
• Technician subject to random drug and alcohol screens as required by the company
• May be required to perform Field Technician duties based on business need

Preferred:
Intermediate skills in Microsoft Office Suite and SAP software

Conditions of Employment

Successful candidate must submit to a post-offer pre-employment physical examination, drug/alcohol screen, and background check. Some positions require Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) registration/clearance as well as ongoing alcohol and drug testing.
