Job summary

Superior Ready Mix Company seeks a Quality Control Lab Technician to join the concrete and aggregates testing lab. You will perform quality control tests and report results in line with ACI standards, while gathering materials for trial batches and ensuring accurate data entry.

You will work with suppliers and internal customers, maintain safety, and participate in calibrations and daily reporting. Experience in concrete testing is valued; commitment to quality is essential.

Qualifications

• Must be able to speak, read, and write in English.
• High school diploma or GED required.
• DOT Soils and Aggregate Certification preferred.
• ACI Strength Testing Certification and ACI Aggregate Testing Technician Level 1 are preferred.

Responsibilities

• Perform stripping, curing, capping, and compression testing in the concrete lab.
• Report cylinder strength test results according to ACI standards.
• Process and prepare aggregate samples for testing; ensure proper testing size.
• Conduct concrete tests (temperature, slump, density, air content, cylinders).
• Perform gradation tests on rock and sand; test durability, moisture, specific gravities, absorptions.
• Enter results into the database daily and distribute reports to stakeholders.
• Prepare materials at production plants for concrete trial batches; weigh materials accurately.
• Calibrate test equipment as per schedule; maintain a clean, safe work area.

responsibilites

• Perform all aspects of stripping, curing, capping, and compression testing in the concrete and concrete aggregates testing lab
• Report concrete cylinder strength test results according to ACI standards
• Process aggregate field test samples and reduce to the appropriate testing size
• Concrete testing to include temperature, slump, density, air content, cylinders, etc.
• Perform gradation tests on rock and sand samples along with additional tests such as durability, moisture, cleanliness value, #200 wash, sand equivalency, specific gravities, and absorptions
• Enter test results daily into a computer database and distribute reports to appropriate individuals
• Gather cement, fly ash, and aggregate materials at production plants in preparation for concrete trial batch tests
• Accurately weigh up each material as listed in the trial batch sheets and set up equipment for trial testing
• Conduct scheduled calibrations on test equipment per the calibration schedule
• Always maintain work area and office equipment in a safe and clean condition
• Troubleshoot job problems and handle job complaints (out-of-spec aggregates, low breaks, Schmidt hammer, cracking, coring)
• Analyze aggregate and strength reports and identify trends
• Work directly with suppliers, vendors, and internal customers, as necessary

REquirements

• Obtain and maintain the following:
• ACI Concrete Strength Testing (within six (6) months in position)
• DOT Soil and Aggregate and/or ACI Aggregate Testing Technician Level 1 (within 1 year in position)
• Job requires the following motions: climbing, bending, squatting, lifting, sitting, stretching, vibration, twisting, pushing/pulling of controls, and riding on rough terrain, use of hand tools such as wrenches and screwdrivers, driving/walking on uneven ground, and climbing stairs
• Frequent lifting up to 75 pounds, occasional lifting of 100 pounds
• May be exposed to extremes of hot or cold weather and be able to work in wet environments
• Must be able to work flexible hours with varying start and stop times
• Overtime work will be required as needed by the company
• Must meet OSHA 10 guidelines and be able to follow all CalPortland Safety Policies
• ANSI-approved PPE will be provided and must be used when required
• Must be able to speak, read, and write in English
• Able to work cooperatively with others
• Must have a valid driver’s license and be insurable
• Technician subject to random drug and alcohol screens as required by the company
• May be required to perform Field Technician duties based on business need

Preferred:
Intermediate skills in Microsoft Office Suite and SAP software

Education:

Conditions of Employment:

Successful candidate must submit to a post-offer pre-employment physical examination, drug/alcohol screen, and background check. Some positions require Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) registration/clearance as well as ongoing alcohol and drug testing.
