Job description

Inspectors are key personnel in the Accurus Quality Department, and their duties are integral to our overall quality management system and customer satisfaction. These employees perform inspections on newly received goods and work-in-process, and are responsible for final inspections of machined aerospace parts and assemblies to ensure compliance with engineering requirements and work instructions. Inspectors are required to document specific information regarding approvals and non-conforming parts and may be involved in problem-solving to identify rework requirements. Additionally, inspectors may provide quality and/or manufacturing process training for manufacturing personnel.

CMM inspectors generally perform their work using a Coordinate Measuring Machine (CMM) to probe movement along multiple axes, but may use traditional precision measurement tools (mics, calipers, gauges, etc.) as well.

Essential Functions

To accomplish this job, an individual must be able to perform each essential function satisfactorily. Reasonable accommodations may be made to help enable qualified individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

  • Determines and utilizes appropriate inspection methods and instruments (micrometers, height gauges, air gauges, radius gauges, calipers, CMM, etc.) to complete in-process and final inspection of machined aerospace parts and assemblies, including simple to moderate layouts and setups on a surface plate
  • Operates CMM to support manufacturing in-process first piece, internal inspection points, and customer-required first article inspection (FAI); completes FAI to AS9102 standards, customer requirements, and company procedures
  • Inspects complex machined fixtures and parts using advanced measuring and layout instruments and equipment
  • Participates in design reviews on cross-functional teams to ensure that conformance to specifications, inspectability, reliability, and quality system objectives are met; provides technical support for manufacturing operations to ensure part quality
  • May assist engineering with the qualification and validation of new or changed tooling or parts
  • Interprets drawings featuring Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerance (GD&T) to identify product inspection requirements
  • Generates inspection reports; analyzes inspection reports to determine adherence to drawings, specifications, and processing procedures; Initiates nonconformance records and disposition of parts not meeting requirements
  • Prepare detailed inspection documentation, such as written descriptions of inspection results, including deviations from engineering specifications
  • Communicates effectively and professionally with internal and external personnel to identify root causes, troubleshoot and address errors and trends, and negotiate the resolution of non-conforming parts and necessary rework or re-inspection
  • Performs other duties as required
  • Regular attendance on-site at the workplace is required

This role is identified as requiring ITAR (International Traffic in Arms Regulations) compliance; therefore, qualified candidates must meet the definition of a U.S. Person (per EAR Part 772 and ITAR 120.15):

Required Education and Work Experience
  • A high School Diploma or GED equivalent
  • An associate degree or similar post-secondary or vocational training in machining or a similar program is preferred
  • A minimum of two (2) years of experience as a CMM Operator in a machining environment; aerospace industry experience is preferred.
  • Experience in CMM Manager preferred
Other Required Skills and Abilities
  • Demonstrated accuracy in reading and interpreting blueprints, planning, and engineering documents, quality standards, customer specifications, manufacturing control plans, including PCM, and other technical design standards
  • Advanced mathematical skills (add, subtract, multiply, and divide using fractions and decimal equivalents), familiar with geometric tolerance
  • Experience in accurately reading precision measuring instrumentation, including mics, calipers, height gauges, tape measures, and other similar devices
  • Understanding of nonconforming product
  • Knowledge of customer and industry standards and quality system requirements, including AS9100, and FAA requirements
  • Knowledge of problem-solving techniques (i.e., Statistical Quality Control/Statistical Process-Control, etc.) is preferred
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing (English)
