Job summary

The Marzetti Company in Columbus, OH is seeking a Quality Assurance Supervisor to oversee 6-8 QA analysts and support staff. You will supervise interviewing, hiring, training, scheduling and performance assessments while ensuring adherence to HACCP and food safety standards across plant operations.

You will review testing results, coordinate corrective actions, and collaborate with plant management to improve production efficiency and product quality.

Qualifications

  • BS/BA in chemistry, biology, microbiology, food science or related field.
  • 2+ years of experience in manufacturing quality assurance.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with employees, cross-functional teams, customers and vendors.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise 6-8 Quality Assurance Analysts and QA support staff, including interviewing, hiring, training, scheduling, appraising and terminating employees.
  • Ensure plant audit procedures are properly executed and work schedules are maintained.
  • Determine overall plant product quality by conducting sampling tests on raw materials, ingredients and packaging.
  • Inform plant management of failures and issues affecting plant efficiency or company operations.
  • Lead corrective actions for major quality problems at production facilities, warehouses and market areas.
  • Train plant personnel in QA testing, sanitation and housekeeping; audit and ensure procedures are followed.
  • Consult with plant management to improve production efficiency and product quality.
  • Coordinate new product development and plant introductions.
  • Serve as Qualified Individual reviewing monitoring and verification for Critical Control Points and Food Safety Preventive Controls.
  • Other duties as assigned by management.

Overview

Directly supervises 6-8 Quality Assurance Analysts and QA support staff. Supervisory responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, training, scheduling, appraising and terminating employees; planning assigning and directing work; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints/grievances and resolving problems.

Responsibilities
  • Confirms that plant audit procedures are properly executed and assigned work schedules are maintained.
  • Determines overall plant product quality by conducting and evaluating various product sampling tests and testsrelated to raw materials/ingredients and packaging.
  • Informs plant management of progress of failures in daily production and any other matters that may affect theplant efficiency and/or the company.
  • Resolves major quality problems at plant production facilities, warehouses and market areas as required.
  • Evaluates and takes corrective action when necessary with regard to product date coding and trade age management at all assigned levels of product movement.
  • Trains and instructs plant personnel in recommended quality control testing, equipment sanitation and general housekeeping practices, and audits, confirms, and ensures these procedures are being maintained.
  • Consults with plant management on operational procedures to improve overall production efficiency.
  • Reviews plant evaluations with plant management, makes appropriate recommendations and establishes timetablefor improvement and corrections.
  • Conducts audits in all areas of quality production.
  • Prepares plant evaluation reports and submits them to the Quality Assurance Manager.
  • Communicates effectively – verbally & in writing – to employees, Management, customers and vendors
  • Oversees the HAACP and pest control programs.
  • Coordinates new product development and plant introduction.
  • Assists in the development of special department projects in conjunction with the Quality Assurance Manager.
  • Serve as a Qualified Individual, reviewing the results of monitoring and verification activities for Critical Control Points and Food Safety Preventive Controls

Qualifications
  • A minimum of 2+ years of experience in manufacturing quality assurance required, preferably in the food and beverage industry.
  • A BS or BA degree in chemistry, biology, microbiology, food science or a related field required.
  • Must have the ability to effectively communicate to employees, other members of the cross-functional plant team, customers, and vendors – both verbally, and in writing.
  • Must be dependable and flexible to support dynamic business needs and 24/7 plant operations, as required.
  • Strong working knowledge of HACCP, food safety management systems, pest control, microbiology, sanitation and GFSI compliance required.
  • Ability to effectively lead, coach, and develop team members required.
  • Training certifications in the following areas preferred: PCQI, HACCP (16-Hour), Better Process Control School, Internal Auditor Training (FSSC22000/ISO, BRC)
  • Prior experience handling third‑party audits, customer audits, and regulatory inspections (FDA/USDA) preferred.
Working Conditions/Environment

Works in a manufacturing environment where the employee is regularly required to speak, read, sit, stand, lift, reach, and bend while moving about the facility. Must be able to stand up for an 8‑hour shift (sometimes longer) with regular breaks. Earplugs, hairnets and steel‑toed shoes are required per company and plant GMP and Safety requirements.
