Job description

Position Summary

The Final Inspector is responsible for performing the final test on all completed cable products. Prior to testing, the inspector moves the cable reels to the final test workstation, verifies the factory order, checks the product specifications, reviews special customer requests, and preps the cable ends to allow access to the fiber for testing. The testing involves performing physical and optical measurements on the cable. After testing, completes required documentation and moves the reel to the Lagging Prep Area. The inspector follows direction from Lead and Quality Engineer regarding disposition of materials and promotes a safe work environment by using correct tools and following 5S and general housekeeping requirements.

Education and Experience
  • High School Diploma or Equivalent
Additional Qualifications
  • Prior experience in Manufacturing Quality Inspection, including principles of Kaizen, Continuous Improvement and ISO, etc.
Essential Responsibilities
  • Test the transmission capability of the cable with an OTDR. The OTDR test the transmission capability by inducing a light pulse into each optical fiber in the cable and measuring the amount of light returning to the source. The attenuation of each fiber is measured to verify the cable's transmission capability. During this automated testing time the inspector reviews data, completes paperwork, preps reels, cleans the work area, and assists other inspectors with verification of the cable print length.
  • As needed, rolls the cable reels into the final testing area, verifies the factory order, reviews the customer specifications, and checks the cable print and paperwork.
  • During this process several checks are made and recorded including (according to cable construction): water penetration, cable outer diameter, armor, jacket and buffer tube dimensions, armor and copper pair continuity measurements.
  • The cable jacket and buffer tubes are carefully removed, and the optical fibers are separated stripped of coating, cleaned, and spliced into the test/splice tubes of the OTDR for testing.
  • Completes required paperwork; files all certified test data (if applicable), makes copies, laminates and attaches certified data to reels.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities
  • Excellent attention to detail and problem‑solving skills to identify and correct any faults in cable manufacturing.
  • Strong technical aptitude of cable production processes, materials, and machinery.
  • Solid understanding of safety regulations and quality control standards.
General Expectations
  • Demonstrate effective communications (verbal, written) skills.
  • Proficient with MS Office, including Word and Excel.
  • Maintain discretion when working with confidential and proprietary information.
  • Strict adherence to Company safety policies and procedures.
  • Conform to all aspects of OFS’ “Standards of Conduct” document.
