Job summary

Hyperion Materials & Technologies Inc. is seeking a CNC Grinder to set up and operate grinding machines per blueprints and procedures. You will help drive throughput, quality and continuous improvement in a manufacturing environment.

The role requires strong knowledge of grinding, tooling selection, and accurate inspection using micrometers, calipers and CMMs. teamwork, safety, and effective communication are essential in daily operations at our Latrobe facility.

Qualifications

  • Must analyze specifications and select tooling according to grinding procedures.
  • Must study blueprints or layouts to visualize grinding and plan sequence of operations.
  • Knowledge of machining processes as they relate to carbide and ceramic industries.
  • Must have good knowledge of safety and safe practices in machining.
  • Need good verbal and written communication skills.

Responsibilities

  • Communicate with Department Leaders regarding job status and capacity.
  • Assist Operators and Trainees in setting up jobs and tracking flow and time.
  • Provide setup and operation instructions and inspection guidance.
  • Write CNC programs using G-Code, MasterCAM, or equivalent.
  • Verify dimensions with gauges and CMMs, following two inspection methods.

Job description

Select how often (in days) to receive an alert:

Set up, program and operate CNC grinding machines according to written procedures and grind work pieces to customer’s blueprint specification. Complete all documentation required per company procedures such as 8-Step Checklists, Route Sheets, SPC Charting, Non-Conformance Reports, Scrap Tags, etc.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Communicate with Department Leaders regarding the status of jobs in order to determine capacity and alternate routes if necessary. Assist Department Leader in pulling jobs through the department.
  • Assist Operators and Trainees in the department in setting up jobs as they enter the department. Track and monitor the flow (parts per hour), quality and time remaining on each job.
  • Provide instructions and feedback to Operators and Trainees within the department in regards to set-up, operation of machine and inspection of parts.
  • Analyze specifications and select tooling and fixturing according to knowledge of grinding procedures. Make appropriate wheel selections for grinding necessary features to print specifications.
  • Write CNC programs utilizing G-Code, MasterCAM or other manufacturer specific code.
  • Verify dimensions of ground work piece for conformance to specifications, using such measuring instruments as micrometers, calipers, comparators, CMMs, and all available inspection equipment. Always using 2 methods of inspection.
  • Follow 8-steps for every job and completes SPC charts in accordance with customer specifications and AGS requirements.
  • Keep work area, department and shop cleaned and organized. Perform basic maintenance on machines.
  • Help implement world-class manufacturing techniques as part of the overall organizational continuous improvement effort.
  • Consistent demonstration, communication and support of the Company's vision.
  • Participate in the development and maintenance of safe work procedures.
Qualifications

  • Must possess good verbal and written communications skills.
Education and/or Work Experience

High school diploma or equivalent combination of education and experience

This position requires 40 hours of continuing education training, including but not limited to: on-the-job training (documented by completed training checklists), in-house training courses, off-site training courses, Community Service Activities: (Volunteering, Coaching, Civic Responsibilities, School or Scouting Organizations, Church Activities, 4-H, etc.), process improvement, Special Projects or Safety Committee involvement.

Technical Skills/Physical Requirements

The specific physical demands of this job include lifting up to 50 pounds, and generally engaging in activities such as standing, bending, lifting, walking, sitting, turning and repetitive motion, generally in an indoor weather-controlled environment. The position involves some risk of exposure to injuries related to physical demands of the job and requires close attention to detail and safety protocols. The position also requires visual and communication skills in observation of machine work and in communicating with co-workers, as well as in reading written instructions.
