Job summary

Michigan Paving and Materials, a CRH Company, is seeking a laboratory-focused team member to support construction materials testing. The role involves following directions, attending Tool Box Talks, and maintaining professional conduct on-site.

Responsibilities include performing routine tests with spectrophotometry and other instruments, preparing reagents, keeping detailed records, and assisting with calibration and maintenance of lab equipment. A GED and familiarity with SOPs are required.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED completed.
  • Experience operating or working around heavy equipment.
  • Laboratory experience or coursework in analytical chemistry hydraulics; ICP is an asset.
  • Able to build prototypes with minimal supervision.
  • Familiar with laboratory equipment, SOPs, and safety guidelines.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel).

Responsibilities

  • Follow directions and participate in weekly safety meetings.
  • Report to the job site on time and in proper work attire.
  • Perform routine laboratory tests using analytical instruments and techniques.
  • Prepare and standardize chemical solutions and samples.
  • Maintain accurate experimental records and calibrate equipment as needed.
  • Maintain clean lab area and comply with PPE and safety rules.
  • Collaborate with co-workers and supervisors as required.

Job description

Job Duties and Responsibilities
  • Ability to follow directions.
  • Actively participate in weekly safety meetings (Tool Box Talks).
  • Display a professional and courteous attitude to co‑workers, supervisors, and the general public at all times.
  • Report to the assigned job site in proper work attire ready to begin work at the designated start time.
  • Strict adherence to all Safety Practices & Procedures.
  • Strict adherence to all company policies and procedures as outlined in the book of company policies.
  • Building laboratory prototype models for testing.
  • Perform routine laboratory tests and analyses using various analytical instruments and techniques, including but not limited to spectrophotometry, colorimetry, and titration.
  • Prepare and standardize chemical solutions, reagents, and samples according to established protocols.
  • Maintain accurate records of experimental data, observations, and results.
  • Assist in the calibration, troubleshooting, and maintenance of laboratory equipment.
  • Follow safety protocols and procedures to ensure a safe working environment.
  • Maintain clean lab working area after completion of job tasks and dispose of debris properly.
  • Willingness to work in a team environment and assist co‑workers or supervisors with other duties as required.
Education and/or Experience
  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED).
  • Previous experience operating or working around heavy equipment.
  • Previous laboratory experience or coursework in analytical chemistry and/or hydraulics laboratory. Experience with inductively coupled plasma (ICP) analysis is an asset.
  • Ability to work with general tools and build prototypes with minimal supervision.
  • General knowledge of lifting and loading techniques.
  • Familiarity with laboratory equipment and instrumentation, including troubleshooting and maintenance.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to follow standard operating procedures (SOPs) and safety guidelines.
  • Ability to stand for long periods of time with regular stretch breaks.
  • Ability to lift up to 23 kg (50 lbs).
  • Excellent organizational, time management, and multitasking abilities.
  • Effective communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Willingness to learn new techniques and adapt to changing priorities and tasks.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (i.e., Outlook, Word, Excel, etc.).
Job Requirements
  • Valid driver's license and clean driving record.
  • Ability to pass a pre‑employment screening and testing.
  • Strict adherence to safety requirements, procedures, and personal protective equipment (PPE) policies.
Physical Demands

  • Language Skills: Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to hear and speak effectively to customers or employees of the organization.
  • Mathematical Skills: Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret graphs.
  • Reasoning Ability: Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form is required to complete tasks in an efficient and safe manner.
  • Vision abilities required by this job include color, close, and distance vision, as well as peripheral, depth, and focus perception vision.
  • Work can be performed at heights, requiring the employee to climb and balance on ladders, scaffolds, and stair towers, often with narrow steps and passageways.
  • This position requires walking, standing, sitting, bending, twisting, stooping, kneeling, crawling, crouching, and lifting.
  • Regularly required to sit and/or stand during a work shift of at least eight hours per day, on uneven surfaces, including natural ground and slopes in varying weather conditions.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms.
  • Must be able to carry, lift, push, and pull up to 50 lbs without assistance.
  • Ability to operate equipment under extreme temperatures and for extended hours.
  • Must be able to work a flexible schedule, based on project needs and demands.
Work Environment

The following physical demands are representative of those that must be met in Construction Operations to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

  • Work is performed outdoors, on a job site, in extreme weather conditions and for extended hours.
  • Work environment periodically exposes the employees to high levels of noise, dirt, grease, and dust that is typically associated with a construction project.
  • Employee regularly works with or near heavy equipment and moving machinery.
  • Work may involve a variety of substances or materials commonly found on construction sites such as form oil, grease, curing compounds, gasoline, diesel fuel, asphalt and concrete.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works near moving mechanical parts, frequently walks on uneven surfaces, including natural ground and slopes, in varying weather conditions, and is regularly exposed to wet, humid, airborne particles, and extreme heat or cold.
  • The employee is occasionally exposed to vibration.
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet but may require protective equipment at some facilities.
