Job summary

Black Canyon Consulting (BCC) is seeking a Quality Assurance Engineer to support the NIH ClinicalTrials.gov program in Bethesda, MD. This role ensures quality, reliability, and backward compatibility of a modernized platform handling clinical research data.

You will work with product, analysts, engineers, and stakeholders to define test strategies, validate requirements, and perform functional, integration, and API testing in an Agile environment.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, engineering, or related field (or equivalent experience).
  • 5+ years of experience in Quality Assurance for web-based or enterprise applications.
  • Experience testing complex, data-driven systems.
  • Experience validating requirements and identifying gaps early in the development lifecycle.
  • Familiarity with Agile/Scrum methodologies.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and documentation skills.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills.
  • High attention to detail and commitment to quality.

Responsibilities

Overview

Black Canyon Consulting (BCC) is searching for a Quality Assurance Engineer to support the ClinicalTrials.gov (CTG) program at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in Bethesda, MD. This role will play a critical part in ensuring the quality, reliability, and backward compatibility of a modernized, enterprise-scale platform that supports the submission, management, and publishing of clinical research data.

The QA Analyst will work closely with Product, Business Analysts, Engineers, UX, and client stakeholders to validate requirements, define test strategies, and ensure new functionality meets both user expectations and feature parity with the legacy system. This role requires strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and a collaborative mindset, as well as hands‑on experience with testing in Agile environments. The candidate should have a fast‑learning aptitude and a natural curiosity – quickly picking up new tools, processes, and domain knowledge in a dynamic environment.

Duties & Responsibilities
Job Responsibilities
Quality Strategy and Test Planning
  • Develop and execute test strategies and test plans for complex, data‑driven applications
  • Analyze requirements, user stories, and acceptance criteria to identify gaps, risks, and ambiguities
  • Partner with Product and Business Analysts to clarify requirements and expected behavior
  • Identify edge cases, regression risks, and impacts across integrated systems
Testing
  • Execute and document results for:
    • Functional testing
    • Regression testing
    • Integration testing
    • Cross-browser and cross-device testing
  • Validate API integrations and data flows between frontend and backend systems
  • Compare legacy and modern system behavior to ensure consistent outcomes
  • Ensure backward compatibility and functional parity with the legacy system
  • Track, document, and verify defect resolution
  • Contribute to improving QA standards, tools, and best practices across the program
Agile Collaboration and Delivery
  • Actively participate in Agile ceremonies, including sprint planning, backlog refinement, reviews, and retrospectives
  • Collaborate closely with frontend and backend engineers during development and testing
  • Provide early and continuous feedback to help teams build quality into the product
  • Support release validation and readiness activities
  • Assist with troubleshooting production and pre-production issues as needed
Required skills and experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, engineering, or a related field (or equivalent experience)

    • Clearance and Location Requirements
      • Must be able to obtain and maintain a Public Trust clearance
      • Must reside in and be authorized to work in the United States
      • Must be local or willing to move to local area at own expense

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience supporting federal government or large enterprise systems
  • Experience testing systems requiring legacy parity or backward compatibility
  • Experience testing REST APIs and backend services
  • Experience in healthcare, life sciences, or regulated environments
  • Experience with test automation tools such as Playwright, Cypress, Selenium, or similar
