Job summary

Steampunk is seeking a Backend Software Engineer to modernize legacy systems by decomposing Java and .NET into Python microservices. You will design REST APIs, batch jobs, and deploy in serverless and Kubernetes environments, with emphasis on secure, automated delivery.

Requirements include 5+ years Python production experience, ability to obtain U.S. government clearance, and strong communication. This role is based in McLean, VA with on-site work.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree with 5+ years total experience.
• 3+ years of experience writing production Python code.
• Experience decomposing or refactoring legacy Java/.NET into Python microservices.
• Experience writing and deploying REST APIs and batch jobs in Python.
• Experience deploying Python applications to AWS Lambda and Kubernetes.
• Familiarity with DevSecOps concepts and CI/CD pipelines (Harness, GitLab CI/CD).
• Ability to obtain a U.S. government Security Clearance.

Responsibilities

• Decompose legacy Java and .NET monoliths into modular Python microservices.
• Design, develop, and deploy concise Python REST APIs and batch jobs.
• Operate services in AWS Lambda and Kubernetes environments.
• Apply CI/CD pipeline practices to accelerate secure delivery.
• Write and debug code for innovative software solutions.
• Participate in code reviews and QA activities.
• Automate unit and functional tests.
• Document software code and training guides.
