Qualifications

  • Strong organization and attention to detail.
  • Computer proficiency; Primavera and MS Project experience beneficial.
  • Experience with detailed plan review and quantity surveys helpful.
  • Analytical and critical thinking skills required.
  • Classes in project management, costing or analysis; related engineering/construction exposure a plus.
  • Solid communication skills; ability to push for essential information.

Responsibilities

  • Researches and evaluates suppliers on price, quality, selection, service, and reliability.
  • Negotiates, renegotiates, and administers contracts with suppliers and vendors.
  • Assist with bids; aims for 40% bid acceptance.
  • Develops and maintains relationships with project managers, estimators, and subcontractors.
  • Forecasts costs with Project Accountants to meet predefined margins.
  • Vets subcontractors and bids for qualifications and suitability.
  • Maintains open communication with PMs, foremen, vendors, and clients.
  • Cross-trains in Commercial and Industrial Division; prepare to grow in scope.

Overview:

A Purchasing Manager is responsible for acquiring goods and services needed for business operations, specifically within the commercial and industrial sectors. This role involves negotiating with suppliers, managing procurement processes, and ensuring the timely and cost-effective acquisition of quality products and services.

Supervisory Responsibilities:
  • Oversee the Procurement Team.
  • Coordinates with various departments to assess procurement needs and priorities.
Duties/Responsibilities:
  • Reviews specifications and plans to determine the scope of work on projects.
  • Purchases the highest quality merchandise at the lowest possible price and in correct amounts.
  • Researches and evaluates suppliers based on price, quality, selection, service, support, availability, reliability, production and distribution capabilities, and the supplier's reputation and history.
  • Negotiates, renegotiates, and administers contracts with suppliers, vendors, and other representatives.
  • Assist with Bids; strives for 40% bid acceptance.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with all project managers, superintendents, subcontractors, and estimators.
  • Assesses needs and gathers information from multiple stakeholders at the onset of a new project; presents data and information.
  • Meticulously attends to a myriad of details.
  • Works closely with Project Accountants and others to forecast costs and set appropriate pricing to result in predetermined margins of profitability.
  • Vet subcontractors and bids for minimum qualifications, experience, and suitability for jobs
  • Maintains open and frequent communication with PMs, other Estimators, Foremen, General Foremen, Superintendents, Subcontractors, Accounting team, vendors, owners, and clients.
  • Spends significant time on the phone every day.
  • In meetings and on job sites, fosters an environment of reliable safety, high quality, accuracy, and completeness.
  • Conducts gap analysis when projects close comparing actual costs to anticipated costs, profits, and timelines; makes recommendations for future bids; communicates lessons learned to all appropriate parties to prevent mistakes and repetitive problems; seeks out ways to improve scheduling, quality, efficiency, communication, and procedures.
  • Other duties as assigned or prudent
  • Cross-train in all facets of the Commercial and Industrial Division, preparing to fill in for anyone absent and grow in responsibility and scope over time.

The person in this role will uphold the culture of J.F. Electric, including relationship building with customers as well as general behavior on J.F. Electric or client premises or at J.F. Electric sponsored events.

Requirements/Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Engineering, or Business preferred but not required
  • 3+ years' Construction or Electrical contracting experience required.
    • Degree may count towards years of experience at the employer's discretion.
  • Ability to adhere to a schedule and reliably show up for all scheduled shifts on time.
  • Strong skills with organization and attention to detail
  • Computer proficiency required; Prima Vera and MS Project experience would be beneficial.
  • Experience with detailed plan review and quantity surveys helpful.
  • Analytical skills and critical thinking skills required.
  • Classes in project management, construction, costing, or analysis heavily weighted; exposure to or experience in engineering, construction, or project management a plus.
  • Solid communication skills required; ability to assertively and respectfully push for information essential.
