Job description

Position Summary

The Pump Mechanic, under the direction of senior mechanics, is responsible for the maintenance, repair, and installation of centrifugal, gear, vacuum, metering, diaphragm, progressive cavity, and other types of pumps. This position also services compressors, gearboxes, cooling towers, and steam traps. Duties include shaft alignment, vibration analysis, and the implementation and maintenance of API seal support systems.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Maintain, inspect, clean, repair, rebuild, install pumps, electric motors, pneumatic and hydraulic equipment, compressors, combustion engines, and other rotating and mechanized equipment.
  • Install mechanical seals and diagnose failed seals.
  • Perform diagnostic inspections and troubleshooting on rotating equipment to identify the root cause of mechanical, hydraulic, and operational failures.
  • Use required personal protective equipment (PPE) and follow lockout/tagout (LOTO), blockout, and safe work permit procedures while performing maintenance activities in hazardous industrial environments.
  • Operate forklifts, mobile elevating work platforms (MEWPs), and other material handling equipment to safely transport personnel, tools, and components in support of maintenance and repair activities.
  • Install form work and epoxy grouting of pump pedestals.
  • Maintain accurate service, maintenance, and inspection records for rotating equipment, including repair activities, and equipment condition assessments.
  • Assist with periodic safety inspections and audits to identify unsafe conditions, equipment deficiencies, and potential operational hazards.
  • Respond to after hours call-ins.
  • Advise maintenance and operations personnel on precision maintenance practices including shaft alignment tolerances, impeller and bearing clearances, fastener torque specifications, vibration analysis interpretation, equipment runout, and other measurable mechanical standards.
  • Perform other related duties as required.

Required Qualifications
  • Knowledge of and experience using precision measurement and alignment instruments including, but not limited to, micrometers, vernier calipers, machinist levels, dial indicators, bore gauges, etc.
  • Experience with vibration monitoring and predictive maintenance techniques, including vibration data collection, analysis, and interpretation for rotating equipment.
  • Familiarity with presses, torches, pullers, lifting equipment, rigging, etc.
  • Strong diagnostic and troubleshooting abilities with advanced mechanical aptitude in the maintenance and repair of rotating equipment. Ability to read, interpret, and analyze pump performance curves, system head curves, and operating parameters.
  • Basic knowledge of mechanical seals and common seal failure causes.
  • Basic electrical sills desired.
  • Experience with CMMS software
Qualifications
  • Minimum 2-years experience in the installation, repair, and maintenance of rotating equipment.
  • Forklift and MEWP Certification desired.
