Job summary

Clearwater Paper Corporation is seeking an experienced Pulp Mill Assistant Superintendent to lead manufacturing operations, driving safety, quality, productivity and cost objectives. You will serve as a technical resource and champion process improvement and capital projects to boost mill performance.

The role requires 5+ years in operations leadership within pulp and paper, plus strong Excel and systems aptitude. On-site Idaho location, with occasional after-hours support as needed.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent work experience.
  • 5+ years of operations leadership experience in pulp and paper.
  • Knowledge of industry operations, machinery, and manufacturing processes.
  • Advanced systems aptitude with strong computer skills, including Microsoft Excel.
  • Availability to provide support outside of standard business hours.

Job Summary

The Pulp Mill Assistant Superintendent leads manufacturing operations to achieve safety, quality, production and cost objectives. The position serves as a technical resource to the operations team and leads process improvement and capital projects to enhance mill performance.

Essential Functions
Operations
  • Establish objectives and goals aligned with the site Integrated Business Plan (IBP) and drive execution through the business unit
  • Ensure operations follow established safety, quality, and performance standards while developing and improving processes as needed
  • Coach teams in problem-solving methodologies to identify root causes, eliminate losses, and implement sustainable solutions
  • Manage operational performance, including budget accountability, improvement projects, capital needs, and daily/weekly operating reviews
  • Drive effective communication, performance reviews, and alignment through established operating rhythms and meeting processes
Safety
  • Champion a strong safety culture by ensuring safe work practices, environmental compliance, and adherence to safety standards
  • Lead safety initiatives, training, and continuous improvement efforts to reduce risk and eliminate unsafe conditions
  • Participate in safety incident investigations, identify root causes, and ensure corrective actions are completed
  • Identify opportunities to reduce employee interaction with equipment and address safety concerns with urgency
Leadership
  • Coach, develop, and support supervisors and team members to build leadership capability, improve performance, and strengthen succession pipelines
  • Provide leadership coverage and support employee performance management, coaching, development, and engagement activities
  • Foster an environment of trust, collaboration, accountability, and open communication aligned with company values
  • Support workforce development through training programs, standard operating procedures, qualification processes, and continuous learning
  • Partner cross-functionally to support operational goals, capital initiatives, employee relations, and business objectives
Quality
  • Maintain and improve quality standards to ensure products meet customer and operational requirements
  • Lead quality improvement initiatives and support process changes to improve product performance and customer satisfactionMonitor quality issues, including rejected or obsolete products, and ensure timely resolution and disposition
  • Other duties as assigned
Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in related field required. May consider equivalent work experience in lieu of degree
  • 5+ years of operations leadership experience in the pulp and paper industry
  • Knowledge of industry operations, machinery, equipment, and manufacturing processes
  • Advanced systems aptitude and strong computer skills, including Microsoft Excel
  • Availability to provide support outside of standard business hours, including evenings and weekends, as needed
Physical Demands & Work Environment
  • Required use of personal protective equipment (PPE) in manufacturing and operational areas, including eye and hearing protection, hard hat, and steel-toed footwear
  • Work in a manufacturing environment with exposure to noise, dust, odors, temperature variations, and industrial conditions
  • Frequent bending, reaching, lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling as required by the role
  • Extended periods of standing, walking, and working on concrete or uneven surfaces
  • Climbing stairs, ladders, platforms, or elevated work areas as required by the role
