Job summary

Akron Children's is seeking a Pulmonary Function Technologist to perform diagnostic pulmonary function tests and contribute to pediatric respiratory care. The role is full-time and onsite in Akron with travel to regional locations.

The ideal candidate will have an accredited respiratory care education, Ohio RRT credential, and BLS, with CPFT/RPFT and PALS/ACLS within 1 year of hire. Pediatric PFT lab experience is preferred.

Qualifications

  • Graduate from an accredited School of Respiratory Care.
  • RRT credential awarded by NBRC in Ohio.
  • Licensed Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) in Ohio.
  • Current Health Care Provider BLS training is required.
  • CPFT or RPFT, PALS, and ACLS certification required within 1 year of hire and maintained.
  • 2 years of pediatric RRT experience preferred; pediatric PFT Lab experience preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Administers pulmonary function tests (spirometry, lung volumes, diffusion) according to protocols.
  • Instructs patients and families on breathing techniques and comfort during testing.
  • Calibrates and maintains PFT equipment for accuracy.
  • Collaborates with pulmonologists and other providers to interpret results and plan care.
  • Documents results and patient data in the EMR.
  • Educates patients about respiratory health and lifestyle changes.
  • Follows safety protocols to ensure secure testing environments.
  • Contributes to department quality initiatives and PFT software proficiency.
  • Demonstrates care for pediatric patients across ages as needed.
  • Performs other duties as required.

Day Shift

Onsite in Akron and travel to regional locations.


Summary

The Pulmonary Function Technologist performs diagnostic testing to evaluate patient respiratory health and asses' respiratory disorders.


Full-Time, 40 Hours/Week


Responsibilities


  • Administers a variety of pulmonary function test, including, but not limited to, spirometry, lung volume measurements, and diffusion capacity studies.

  • Instructs patients and families on proper breathing techniques and ensure their comfort during testing procedures.

  • Calibrate and maintain pulmonary function testing equipment to ensure accurate and reliable results.

  • Collaborate with Pulmonologist and other Providers to interpret results and contribute to patient care plans.

  • Document and maintain accurate records of patient information, test results, and other relevant data in the electronic medical record.

  • Educate patients and families about respiratory health, treatment options and lifestyle modifications.

  • Follow established protocols and safety guidelines to ensure a secure and effective testing environment.

  • Participate in department quality initiatives and proficiency in the pulmonary function testing software.

  • Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care for the physical, psychological, social, educational, and safety needs of the patients served regardless of age.

  • Other duties as required.


Other Information

Technical Expertise


  • Experience in care of asthma patients with experience in a pediatric PFT laboratory preferred.

  • Membership in the American Thoracic Society (ATS) is preferred.

  • Experience working with various levels within an organization is required.

  • Experience in healthcare is preferred.

  • Strong problem-solving skills are required.

  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written are required.

  • Experience working in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Excel, Word) or similar software is required.

  • Experience working with an electronic medical record system (i.e. EPIC) is preferred.


Education And Experience


  • Education: Graduate from an accredited School of Respiratory Care.

  • Registered Respiratory Therapist credential awarded by the National Board for Respiratory Care in Ohio is required.

  • Licensed Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) in the state of Ohio is required.

  • Certification: Current Health Care Provider BLS training is required; CPFT or RPFT, PALS, and ACLS certification is required within 1 year of hire and must be maintained throughout employment.

  • Years of relevant experience: 2 years' experience as a pediatric RRT is preferred. Experience in pediatric PFT Lab is preferred.

  • Years of supervisory experience: None.
