Job summary

Studio Gang Architects, Ltd. is seeking a Publications Manager in New York City to lead editorial publication projects, from books to magazines, and to shape content strategy for the firm's architectural work.

You will edit, fact-check, coordinate with designers and printers, and manage rights and permissions for high-quality print and digital publications. The role requires a Master’s in Architecture and experience with long-form editorial content and Adobe Creative Cloud.

Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Architecture or related field with at least 1 year of relevant experience.
  • Experience developing long-form editorial content for books or periodicals.
  • Ability analyze architectural/urban plans and diagrams.
  • Proficient with Adobe CC for professional publications.
  • Experience with archival research and primary source material.
  • Experience managing image rights and licensing.

Responsibilities

  • Plan, coordinate, revise, and edit written materials about the companys architectural and urbanism projects and research.
  • Document and share the companys work with diverse audiences.
  • Manage the development of new publication projects (books, magazine issues) as a thought partner and practical producer, refining themes and ideas, and conducting in-depth historical research.
  • Develop story or content ideas, ensuring that audience appeal is considered.
  • Lead efforts to secure high-resolution images and permissions.
  • Use digital software to design publications for print.
  • Write text that is consistent with the companys publication style, editorial policies, and publishing requirements.
  • Coordinate with graphic designers, publishers, and printers.
  • Edit and review company-wide design texts (booklets and communication materials, etc.) to detect and correct errors; verify facts, names, locations, dates, and statistics.
  • Prepare and edit copy to improve readability, focusing on style, content, structure, and grammar.
  • Work closely with company leaders and design teams to write and edit narrative text about the companys projects, which range from buildings and urban plans to self-initiated architectural research.
  • Evaluate and respond to external publication requests.

Responsibilities

Requirements
  • Masters degree in Architecture, or related field and 1 year of relevant experience as a Publications Manager, Editor, Program Assistant, or alternate acceptable related occupation.
  • Work or academic experience must have included:
  • 1\. Developing, writing, and reviewing long-form editorial content for publication (books and periodicals); conducting structured interviews to collect primary source material; integrating text and visuals.
  • 2\. Analyzing architectural and urban plans, sections, elevations, diagrams, construction documents, and 3D physical models, to understand building materials, spatial relationships, user experience, among other design principles.
  • 3\. Utilizing the Adobe Creative Cloud Suite, including InDesign, Illustrator, and Photoshop, to design publications.
  • 4\. Copyediting text for clarity, grammar, and consistency with major editorial style guides (MLA, AP, Chicago) and in-house manuals; fact-checking (dates, statistics, names, locations); utilizing revision software tools (Microsoft Word Document Comparison, Track Changes; Adobe Acrobat PDF markup and review).
  • 5\. Performing archival research using catalogues, databases, finding aids, and digitized collections to locate, compare, and analyze primary and secondary sources (architectural periodicals, books, drawings, photos, maps).
  • 6\. Securing high-resolution visuals for print publications; managing copyright and licensing agreements; and organizing and tracking visual assets using cloud-based file-sharing services.
