Job summary

The City of Beaverton is hiring a Utility Technician to support stormwater and street infrastructure maintenance in Oregon. This full-time, non-exempt position falls under SEIU and DOT guidelines; three vacancies exist.

Responsibilities include installing, maintaining, and repairing utility lines; assisting operators; maintaining equipment; updating GIS maps; and complying with safety and reporting requirements. A CDL-B with air brake/tank endorsements is required within 360 days of hire.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required.
• 3 years of experience in operations, installation, construction, repair, and maintenance of street structures.
• Equivalent combination of education and experience acceptable.

• Install, maintain, and repair utility lines and set up traffic control safety zones.
• Assist equipment operator with operation and maintenance of equipment; adjust and repair field machinery.
• Maintain Vegetated Water Quality Facilities and update GIS maps in the field.
• Record confined space entries and ensure equipment is in good condition; assist in emergency response as needed.
• Review and adhere to standards described in the Public Works Utility Technician 1 class specification.

Job description

The City of Beaverton’s Public Works Storm Maintenance Division maintains the city’s stormwater systems and collections infrastructure to prevent localized flooding, mitigate erosion, and maintain water quality in local streams and rivers. This is a full-time, non-exempt, SEIU-classified, and DOT-covered position. Individuals in this position will be subject to random drug screens and breath alcohol tests in accordance with DOT guidelines. There are three vacancies.

• Install, maintain, and repair utility lines. Set up traffic control safety zones. Perform flagging functions. Inspect and test lines using a variety of equipment and chemicals.
• Assist equipment operator with the operation of equipment. Install various cutting attachments including field repairs to machine and device adjustments. Maintain equipment and tools.
• Assist in the maintenance and installation of Vegetated Water Quality Facilities.
• Set up shoring and enter confined spaces. Keep records of confined space entry and equipment in good working order.
• Update GIS maps used in field, documenting new or deficient information.
• Employee’s schedule may change with minimal notice for emergency response needs.
• Additional duties are outlined in the Public Works Utility Technician 1 class specification.

Minimum qualifications

• High school diploma or GED, and
• 3 years of experience in operations, installation, construction, repair, and maintenance of street structures, or
• An equivalent combination of education and experience enabling the incumbent to perform the essential functions of the position.

Licensing and special requirements

• Valid driver’s license and the ability to meet the city’s driving standards
• Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL-B) with air brake and tank endorsements required within 360 days of hire
• Oregon Department of Environmental Quality Wastewater Operator Level 1 certification required within 1 year of hire.
• Ability to pass reference checks and satisfy the requirements of a background check, physical exam, and pre-employment drug screen.

Wagerange

$28.84 - $38.65 hourly

Starting rate will be determined based on an analysis of related work experience as outlined in the Oregon Equal Pay Act. New hires who meet minimum requirements will start at step one. Higher steps within the posted wage range may be offered to those who have additional years of directly related experience.
