Employment Opportunities
The City of Brentwood accepts employment applications year-round. All applications must be accompanied by an Applicant Release (found under the Employment tab to the left). There are several ways to apply:

- In Person: Printed employment applications may be picked up at all city buildings.

Job Description:
Plans, organizes, directs and supervises the maintenance and repair of city streets and equipment. Oversees the Sewer Lateral functions of the City and vehicle maintenance. This also includes the supervision of sanitation drivers; daily schedules, maintenance of trash equipment, procedures related to refuse collection, establishing routes, ensuring safety of operators and equipment, purchasing related to the sanitation functions.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities
- Plans, organizes, directs and supervises the maintenance and repair of city streets, equipment and vehicles.
- Assists with, coordinates and supervises work performed by contractors, engineers, and utility company representatives.
- Responsible for maintaining streets and properties owned or managed by the City of Brentwood in good repair and usable condition through assigned managers and indirect reports.
- Responsible for maintaining rights of way, parking lots, vehicles and equipment owned by the City of Brentwood in good repair and usable condition through assigned managers and indirect reports; oversees work completed at the city garage.
- Schedules, assigns and directs staff in the repair or removal of sidewalks, driveway approaches, pavement, patching and asphalt overlays, inspecting/cleaning storm sewers, trees, shrubbery, and all weather-related emergencies.
- Assists with the coordination of maintenance of all city owned vehicles, equipment, buildings, traffic signs, street striping, snow removal, sewer laterals, and safety equipment through assigned managers and indirect reports.
- Maintains accurate records of repair and maintenance activities.
- Assists with monitoring and inspecting Brentwood City property to determine what maintenance and repairs are necessary, schedules as needed, follows through to ensure work has been completed properly and in a timely manner.
- Prepares recommendations for annual plans and budgets; identifies cost control methods for supplies, tools, and heavy equipment; maintains and monitors inventory of all equipment and supplies, and submits orders for necessary supplies and equipment within defined budgets to the Director of Public Works; approves all Public Works billing in regards to street maintenance.
- Responsible for safety and quality in all Public Works activities.
- Supervises the Sanitation Route Drivers and assigned sanitation laborers; provides input into performance evaluations.
- Maintains positive resident relations, establishes good community relationships, acts as an ambassador for the city with the public; deals with issues routinely related to cans, replacement of bins, late retrieval of trash, concerns and complaints from residents.
- Manages Maintenance Employees and the Sanitation Route Drivers and assigned sanitation laborers; provides input into performance evaluations.
- Assists with departmental long-range goals and plans for recycling and other environmental programs.
- Employee relations issues, recommends corrective actions up to and including termination of employees; helps interview and hire new employees; approves time off; helps establish policies and procedures related to trash handling and removal.
- Researches, reads reviews, and makes recommendations related to purchasing of equipment and technology for the benefit of the Public Works Department and to aid in the removal of refuse in the City of Brentwood; provides input on budget as requested.
- Manages resources related to recycling, landfill and compost.
- Works with vendors, suppliers and mechanics to ensure all equipment and vehicles are in proper working order and ready for daily use.
- Oversees the Sewer Lateral Program with direction from the B.O.A. and any policies set forth by the Board or any Sub-Committees.
- Performs various office duties such as answering phone calls for customer inquiries and the scheduling of bulk pick-ups and recycling bin deliveries.
- Must be able to represent the department in the absence of the Director for B.O.A. meeting or other meetings where a representative from the department is needed.
Knowledge Skills and Abilities
- Comprehensive knowledge of tools, materials, methods and best practices for street maintenance and repair, vehicle repair and maintenance, and staff management.
- Must be able to perform manual labor as needed.
- Knowledge of best practices regarding safety and quality.
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions as well as effectively communicating with staff and peers.
- Ability to tactfully and diplomatically deal with city officials, contractors, residents, engineers, utilities, staff and residents, as well as the general public who may at times be irate or upset.
- Ability to work in a variety of weather conditions from normal to extreme.
- Ability to manage personnel and projects.
- Extensive knowledge of residential trash services.
- Ability to drive all necessary vehicles and equipment.
- Ability to use Word, Excel, and various other software applications needed to maintain communication and reports.
Minimum Requirements – Education, Certification, and Experience
- Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a bachelor’s degree in engineering, public administration, management, construction or a related field; or sufficient work experience to gain similar knowledge.
- Five (5) years’ experience in the field of Public Works with experience in facilities management; at least three years of supervisory experience within Public Works.
- Education may be substituted for experience if the candidate demonstrates a sufficient level of knowledge and skill to accomplish the essential functions of the role.
- Must have a current Class B CBL with air brake endorsement required or ability to obtain within 12 months of employment required.
Physical Demands/Work Environment
- Must frequently refine existing work methods and develop new techniques, concepts or programs within established limits or policies.
- Work is sometimes performed both indoors at a desk or table with intermittent sitting, or outside in hot and cold conditions.
- Must lift light objects (greater than 25 pounds) as a requirement of the job.
- Must be able to operate a motor vehicle and maintain a valid driver’s license.
Contacts
Frequent contact with federal and state officials and administrators, the general public, and internal contacts requiring tact and diplomacy are requirements of the job.
