JOB SUMMARY

This position is responsible for performing a variety of duties associated with the construction, repair, and maintenance of public services infrastructure. An incumbent in this position may be designated "Public Works Maintenance Worker II" or "Public Works Maintenance Worker III."

MAJOR DUTIES

Assists in the scheduled maintenance and repair of city streets, rights-of-ways, alleys, medians, storm-water drainage systems, bridges, and other properties under city obligation. Operates a variety of equipment, machinery, and tools used in department projects and activities, which may include weed cutters, blowers, mowers, and chainsaws; operates dump trucks, backhoes, tractors and associated attachments, and other related equipment. Performs general cleaning/maintenance tasks necessary to keep vehicles, equipment, and tools in operable condition, which may include inspecting equipment, checking fluid levels, replacing fluids, greasing equipment, replacing parts, washing/cleaning equipment, or cleaning shop/work areas; monitors equipment operations to maintain efficiency and safety. May respond to emergency situations as needed involving accidents, road spills, debris, or other situations; performs traffic flagging activities to assist with traffic control when necessary. Performs all work duties and activities in accordance with city policies and procedures and supervisory instructions; works in a safe manner and reports unsafe activities, conditions, and faulty equipment. Water and Sewer Reads water meters; turns water service on and off for customers; assists in the repair of water and sewer mains. Locates water and sewer lines for new construction connections. Maintains stormwater drainage systems by cleaning catch basins, ditches, and other stormwater structures to prevent localized flooding; removes debris and other safety hazards from streets, curbs, storm drains, alleys, and adjacent public areas. Troubleshoots water and sewer line problems. Inspects water and sewer system components for proper installation, placement, and functionality. Inspects water meter and sewer service connections for proper installation, placement, and functionality. Prepares samples for state laboratory for testing; completes state-required testing reports. Monitors and maintains the safe operation of sewer lift stations. Cleans rods, floats, and transducers at lift stations. Runs back-up pumps and generators; pulls pumps for inspection and repairs. Performs related duties.

KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION
  • Knowledge of public works maintenance and repair procedures and methods.
  • Knowledge of city and departmental policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of equipment and tool operation and maintenance practices.
  • Knowledge of traffic laws and rules involved in vehicle and equipment operation and basic traffic control/barricade procedures.
  • Knowledge of city policies regarding safe work practices.
  • Knowledge of water sampling and testing procedures.
  • Skills in written and oral communication.
  • Skill in operating power-assigned motor vehicles and related equipment.
  • Skill in prioritizing and organizing work.
SUPERVISORY CONTROLS

The Director of Public Works assigns work in terms of city goals and objectives. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with procedures and the nature and propriety of the final results.

GUIDELINES

Guidelines include the City Comprehensive Development Manual, city subdivision regulations, city zoning ordinances, international construction codes, and engineering standards. These guidelines require judgment, selection, and interpretation in application.

COMPLEXITY/SCOPE OF WORK

The work consists of related duties associated with the inspection, maintenance, and repair of city streets, rightsof-way, storm water drainage systems, water and sewer systems, facilities, properties, and other sites under city obligation. Cold or inclement weather contributes to the complexity of the work. The purpose of this position is to participate in the inspection, maintenance, and repair of assigned city infrastructures. Successful performance helps ensure the safe and efficient maintenance and completion of public works projects.

Contacts are typical with co-workers, other city employees, property owners, business owners, federal and state agency personnel, and members of the general public. Contacts are typically to give or exchange information, resolve work-related problems, and provide services.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK ENVIRONMENT

The work is typically performed while sitting at a desk or table or while intermittently sitting, standing, walking, bending, crouching, or stooping. The employee frequently lifts light and occasionally heavy objects, climbs ladders, distinguishes between shades of color, and utilizes the sense of smell. The work is typically performed in an office and outdoors, occasionally in cold or inclement weather. The employee is exposed to noise, dust, dirt, grease, and machinery with moving parts. Work requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, gloves, etc.
