Job summary

City of Madison Water Utility is seeking a Public Works Maintenance Worker 2 to perform varied public works tasks such as custodial work, vehicle cleaning, inspection of water system problems, and operating valves to control water flow. You will communicate with staff to manage issues and notify the public about outages and resolutions, while keeping clear maintenance records. Work shifts run 10:00 a.m.

to 6:00 p.m. and the city promotes diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging.

Qualifications

  • 1 year experience in public works construction, maintenance work, custodial and building maintenance, or repair work.
  • Two (2) years of experience in applying: tools, equipment, and technique used in public works maintenance work - custodial, vehicle cleaning, and water system maintenance; water systems; safety precautions; computer software applicable to the duties of the position.

Job description

The City of Madison Water Utility is looking to hire a Public Works Maintenance Worker 2! This position performs varied public works maintenance tasks, including:

  • Custodial and janitorial work
  • Cleaning of vehicles
  • Inspection and assessment of reported water system problems
  • Operating valves in the system to close off or reduce water flow to parts of the system
  • Notifying members of the public about water supply problems and how they will be resolved
  • Communicating with Leadworker, Supervisor and Operator to manage system problems
  • Working with other staff as assigned to correct system problems

Work Hours: 10:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m.

  • Operate a snow plow, riding lawn mower with front mounted broom attachment, and snow blower or hand shovel for snow removal.
  • Break up ice and apply sand and salt to parking lot or road.
  • Safely operate riding lawn mower, push mower, gas weed trimmer, leaf blower, and various grounds maintenance hand tools.
  • Clean buildings, surfaces, equipment, and lighting, using hand and power equipment and appropriate materials.
  • Collect, sort, and prepare trash and recyclables for collection.
  • Treat surfaces with protective materials. Sweep, wash windows, clean parking lots, and clean vehicle storage buildings.
  • Wash and wax vehicles.
  • Lead and train other staff in work assignments.
  • Maintain records of work performed.
  • Respond to reports of water system problems, such as main, valve, hydrant, or service leaks, leaking meters, discolored water, low pressure, or no water as directed by the Leadworker or Waterworks Operator.
  • Assess problem and communicate with Leadworker or Operator in order to take corrective action.
  • Operate valves, hydrants, and curb stops in the water system.
  • Notify customers about problems, how the problem will be resolved, and impact on customers.
  • Perform general labor as directed by Leadworker or Waterworks Operator.
  • Build or repair flasher barricades; repair blacktop; maintain signage or collect barricades at job sites; deliver tools or equipment; work on a repair crew under the direction of the Public Works Leadworker or Maintenance Supervisor.
  • At the direction of the Waterworks Operator, investigate facilities for various alarms or confirm readings on equipment; collect water samples for fluoride analysis; and using a Hach Chlorine pocket colorimeter II, confirm chlorine residual at a remote station.
  • Perform related work as assigned.
  • One (1) year experience in public works construction, maintenance work, custodial and building maintenance, or repair work.

  • Two (2) years of experience in applying the following:
    • Types and operation of tools, equipment, and technique commonly used in public works maintenance work - custodial, vehicle cleaning, and water system maintenance.
    • Water systems.
    • Related safety precautions.
    • Computer software applicable to the duties of the position.

Depending on the number of applications random selection may be used to determine who moves forward in the recruitment process.

Possession of a Class A Commercial Driver's License with airbrake endorsement. The successful candidate must have passed the written portion of the relevant Department of Transportation testing process before starting employment. A condition of continued employment is passage of the skills portion of the test and obtaining the required operator's license within six (6) months.

Physical Requirements: Employees in this position must be able to lift/carry objects weighing up to 90 pounds and must be capable of lifting heavier objects with another employee. In addition, employees must be able to frequently walk, stand, bend, twist, squat, climb and reach for extended periods of time. This position may require some work outdoors in all types of weather.
