Job summary

The City of Johnston is seeking a public works laborer to perform laboring, equipment operation, and semi-skilled building and mechanical tasks for maintenance and repair of streets, premises, and municipal properties. This role supports scheduled and emergency Public Works services and contributes to overall community safety.

Responsibilities include operating heavy equipment, performing manual tasks, handling traffic safety measures, and assisting in equipment maintenance.

Qualifications

• Knowledge of the materials, equipment and tools used in road/street maintenance and public works functions.
• Knowledge of the operating characteristics of heavy and specialized equipment.
• Ability to perform a variety of laboring and semi-skilled tasks in operation, maintenance and repair of streets/roadways and equipment.
• Ability to follow oral and written policies, procedures and instructions.

Responsibilities

• Builds and sets forms for concrete pouring for curbs, sidewalks and utilities; mixes and pours materials.
• Operates and maintains street maintenance equipment and related vehicles; assists in repair of municipal vehicles.
• Trims trees, clears debris, and removes hazards to public safety.
• Loads and transports materials; installs and maintains signs and traffic devices; participates in flood control and emergency tasks.
