Job summary

McKenzie County seeks an Assistant County Engineer to apply civil engineering principles to Public Works in Watford City, ND. The role serves as the first assistant to the Engineering Director, performing technical tasks, fieldwork, and supervision of staff, with budget and safety considerations.

Level and salary commensurate with experience; oversight of road and bridge projects, construction inspection, and coordination with external agencies are key duties.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering or related field with emphasis on Public Works infrastructure.
• 5 years' experience in Civil Engineering Project Management.
• 2 years of staff management and supervision.
• ND Professional Engineer (PE) registration or ability to obtain ND PE within 6 months through Endorsement.
• Valid Driver's License.
• Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite.
• Effective communication skills, both written and verbal.
• Must be able to report to Watford City office daily at required schedule time.
• Physical requirements: lift up to 50 pounds, kneel, stoop, sit, walk extensively.

Responsibilities

• Supervises the activities of Road & Bridge staff, Engineer I and II, and Engineer Inters in planning, designing, and inspecting County road projects.
• Oversees construction with onsite inspection to address deficiencies and respond to questions from inspection staff.
• Manages allocation of material and manpower, prioritizes emergencies, and coordinates maintenance with other agencies.
• Directs operations to meet goals within budget and staffing, organizing workloads and schedules.
• Prepares presentations for County Commissioners to inform the public and officials about project issues and solutions.
• Directs development, preparation, review, and administration of plans, specs, and estimates for contracted or County force construction and maintenance projects; approves change orders and pay requests.
• Leads in-house county design program development and selects professional design consultants through RFP processes.
• Collaborates with County Road Department for engineering issues during county workforce projects.
• Provides real-time on-site advice for construction and maintenance, including geotechnical and constructability concerns.
