Job summary

The Town of Cohasset is seeking a dependable Heavy Equipment Operator to join the Department of Public Works’ Highway team. This full-time union position operates front-end loaders, backhoes, sweepers, and other equipment to support road construction, maintenance, and repair.

The successful candidate will work safely, communicate effectively, and perform routine inspections, with overtime/emergency response as required during outdoor work in various weather conditions.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent required; two years of advanced technical or vocational training or experience operating heavy equipment.
• CDL Class B preferred; must obtain within one year if not held at hire date; CDL costs reimbursable after three years.
• Hoisting Engineer’s Licenses 2B, 4E, 4G may be obtained after hire; DOT medical card may be obtained after hire.

Responsibilities

• Operate heavy equipment, including front-end loaders, backhoes, sweepers, and other machinery used in public works projects.
• Perform highway construction, maintenance, and repair work, including manual labor and use of pneumatic and hand tools.
• Conduct routine equipment inspections, preventive maintenance, and safety checks.
• Follow operating procedures, safety requirements, and supervisory instructions.
• Provide support to other Public Works divisions as needed.
• Respond to emergencies and work outdoors in adverse weather conditions.
